RECONCILING SEXUAL IDENTITY WITH SPIRITUAL DEVOTION: STRATEGIES FOR LGBTQ BELIEVERS

3 min read Queer

LGBTQ is an acronym that stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning individuals. These groups of people have faced challenges because of their sexual orientation and gender identities in various social contexts. One area where this has been prevalent is in religious settings such as churches, temples, mosques, synagogues, etc. This situation is particularly complicated because many religions around the world oppose LGBTQ communities.

Most Christian denominations condemn homosexuality in one way or another. It is due to this reason that some LGBTQ believers struggle to reconcile their sexual identity with spiritual devotion. The purpose of this article is to explore different strategies that LGBTQ believers can employ to reconcile their sexual identity with their spiritual devotion despite doctrinal opposition.

One strategy that LGBTQ believers can utilize to reconcile their sexual identity with spiritual devotion is to embrace themselves. Acceptance refers to accepting oneself as a person regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity. Self-acceptance enables LGBTQ believers to avoid being pressured into conforming to societal expectations.

A queer individual who accepts him/herself will not feel obligated to act like heteronormative cisgender individuals. Instead, they will be comfortable being who they are without feeling ashamed, guilty, or embarrassed. Another strategy that LGBTQ believers can use is creating a safe space for themselves.

Self-love is an essential tool for reconciling sexual identity with spiritual devotion. LGBTQ believers should love themselves genuinely to be able to live harmoniously between their physical and spiritual selves. They need to know that they are unique human beings whose lives are worth living even if others disapprove of them. This means embracing the good and bad aspects of life while celebrating their achievements and accomplishments. Thirdly, seeking support from other believers in similar situations is also crucial.

LGBTQ believers who experience discrimination at church may seek solace in places where they feel accepted. There are various groups such as Gay Christian Network (GCN) and Reconciled to God (RTG). These organizations provide a platform where people can discuss religion and sexuality issues openly. In addition, attending these meetings helps participants get spiritual guidance from fellow believers who share similar experiences. Fourthly, reading books and watching videos on faith and sexual orientation is another way that can help.

There are movies and documentaries about transgender Christians who have overcome challenges. One example is 'Love the Sinner: A Story of a Transgender Pastor' by Vicky Beeching.

LGBTQ believers face numerous challenges because of doctrinal opposition.

Through accepting themselves, loving themselves, seeking support, and engaging with relevant resources, they can reconcile their sexual identity with spiritual devotion.
