QUEERING THE SEXUALITY DISCOURSE: UNDERSTANDING PRIVILEGES IMPACT ON REPRESENTATION enIT FR DE PL TR PT RU AR JA ES

2 min read Queer

Queerness is a term used to describe an individual's non-conformity to gender and sexual norms. It can be identified through many aspects such as expression, dressing style, behavior, and attraction towards people regardless of their biological gender. Queerness has gained immense attention recently due to its prevalence in the media, especially during pride month.

There is still a lack of representation for certain groups within the community that makes it harder to create awareness about them. Privilege plays a significant role in influencing which queer voices are amplified or silenced in public discourse.

Influence of privilege on queer voices

Privilege refers to the unearned advantage or power conferred upon individuals based on their social status, identity, race, ethnicity, religion, class, or gender. This means that some members of the LGBTQ+ community are more privileged than others, which influences their voice in the public sphere.

Cisgender white gay men enjoy more privileges compared to transgender women of color who face discrimination from both straight and queer communities. As a result, they have less access to resources such as job opportunities, housing, healthcare, education, etc., making it difficult for them to speak up on issues affecting their community. This is because these groups often live under oppression and do not possess enough capital to influence decision-making processes.

Effects of silencing queer voices

When certain queer voices remain silent due to privilege, the entire community suffers. The most affected groups include those that identify with multiple marginalized identities, such as black lesbians and trans people with disabilities. When we ignore their stories, we fail to understand how their intersectional experiences shape their perceptions of themselves and the world around them. Moreover, this creates a culture where certain groups' needs go unmet because they cannot find representation within the existing narrative.

Promoting inclusivity in public discourse

To ensure that all queer voices are heard, we must work towards creating an environment that recognizes diversity and promotes inclusion. We can achieve this through various approaches such as increasing representation across different media platforms like TV shows, movies, books, magazines, and newspapers.

We need to create safe spaces for individuals to share their stories without fear of judgment or violence based on identity markers.

We should address systemic barriers such as racism, sexism, ableism, and classism, which hinder some members of the LGBTQ+ community from accessing necessary resources needed to amplify their voice.

How does privilege influence which queer voices are amplified or silenced in public discourse?

Privileged individuals have access to more resources and opportunities for self-expression than those who lack them, which means their voices are more likely to be heard and amplified in public discourse. This can create a situation where underrepresented groups may not feel comfortable sharing their experiences because they worry that their perspectives won't be taken seriously due to their identity or background.
