Queer representation in media is becoming increasingly common, especially in children's programming. As such, children watching these shows may come to understand different types of identities and orientations, leading to a better understanding of others. This could be important for creating an accepting society where all individuals feel comfortable expressing themselves without fear of discrimination.
"Steven Universe" features a character named Steven who is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns. In this show, Steven is seen exploring their identity, questioning what it means to be male or female, and ultimately coming out as nonbinary. This could help normalize nonbinary identity for viewers and encourage acceptance among peers.
In addition to nonbinary characters, animated series also feature LGBTQ+ characters in other ways.
"She-Ra and the Princesses of Power" has several queer relationships, including lesbian couple Adora and Catra, and bisexual couple Glimmer and Bow. The show portrays love between people regardless of gender, which challenges traditional views about romantic relationships. It also includes transgender characters like Entrapta, who is a prominent antagonist but also happens to be a woman who transitioned from man to woman.
The presence of queer characters in pop culture can shift societal norms by helping to dispel misconceptions about sexual orientation and gender identity. Children growing up with exposure to diverse representations will likely have more tolerant attitudes towards differences than those raised in homogenous environments. They are also less likely to assume that everyone fits into a binary mold, which can prevent bullying and discrimination. As such, they may grow up expecting greater acceptance and respect for all identities, creating a more inclusive society overall.
