In this essay, I will explore how queer joy can be seen as an act of resistance against pathologization - the social process whereby certain behaviors are labeled as abnormal or deviant and therefore need treatment or correction.
Pathologization can take many forms, such as medicalizing gender variance or equating same-sex attraction with mental illness.
Transgender people who identify as male but were assigned female at birth may face discrimination from healthcare providers who insist they must be treated for their 'mental disorder'. Similarly, gay and lesbian individuals have been institutionalized and subjected to conversion therapy to change their sexual orientation.
