PEYRONIES DISEASE: A GUIDE TO DIAGNOSIS, SYMPTOMS, CAUSES & TREATMENTS RU EN ES

2 min read Sexual Health

The condition wherein the penis bends excessively upward is known as Peyronie's disease, which affects approximately 1% of men worldwide. It occurs when plaque builds up in the penis resulting in scarring. Scar tissue can form anywhere inside the penis causing curving. This disorder could be triggered because of an injury that causes bleeding within the penis like when erection occurs during intercourse or masturbation. In some cases, however, it may also happen due to inherited factors such as connective tissue disorders. The most prevalent symptom of this disease is painful or difficult erections, curvature of the penis while erect or flaccid, shortening of the penis, difficulty in obtaining and maintaining an erection, and penile deformities. Additionally, the size of the penis becomes smaller, which results in decreased sexual performance. This illness might cause embarrassment among people who have it, thus preventing them from having intimate relationships with their partners. Fortunately, treatment options are available for patients suffering from this disease. To begin with, one should seek consultation with a urologist specializing in treating male genitalia problems. Treatment includes surgery and medications. Surgical procedures include plication (straightening the fibrous tissues), grafting (realigning the plaque) and incision. Medicines comprise of pentoxifylline, potassium aminobenzoate, colchicine, and verapamil.
