PARENTAL ACCEPTANCE AND MENTAL HEALTH OUTCOMES: HOW IT MEDIATES THE EFFECTS OF SOCIAL STIGMA AMONG LGBTQ+ YOUTH

There is growing evidence that parents can play an important role in their children's mental health outcomes. Another study found that youth who reported low levels of parental acceptance were more likely to engage in risky behaviors such as substance abuse and self-harm. These findings suggest that parental support can act as a protective factor against the negative effects of social stigma.

It is also possible that some youth may face both high levels of social stigma and low levels of parental acceptance, making them particularly vulnerable to poor mental health outcomes.

Some LGBTQ+ youth may come from families with religious or cultural beliefs that conflict with their sexual identity, leading to feelings of rejection and isolation. Such experiences could exacerbate existing stressors related to coming out and navigating an often hostile world.

While there are complex factors at play when it comes to the intersection of parental acceptance, social stigma, and mental health, these studies highlight the importance of supporting LGBTQ+ youth through inclusive policies, education initiatives, and family therapy interventions. By creating safe and accepting environments for all young people, we can help reduce the burden of mental illness and promote resilience.
