NAVIGATING IDENTITY EXPRESSION IN HIGHLY STRUCTURED ENVIRONMENTS: EXPLORING THE CHALLENGES FACED BY LGBT SOLDIERS

2 min read Trans

The topic I have chosen for this project is "How do LGBT soldiers navigate identity expression in highly hierarchical and rule-bound environments?" This topic is important because it explores how individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, or asexual/aromantic/agender (LGBTQIA+) navigate their identities within military organizations that are known to be highly structured and regulated. These individuals face unique challenges when it comes to expressing themselves authentically and openly due to the strict rules and hierarchies that govern military life.

When it comes to navigating identity expression in these environments, LGBTQIA+ soldiers must balance their personal needs and desires with the expectations and norms of their unit and command structure. They may feel pressure to conform to traditional gender roles and sexual orientations or risk facing discrimination, harassment, or even discharge from the military. In addition, they may also struggle with feelings of isolation and loneliness as they try to find acceptance and support among their peers and superiors.

One way that some LGBTQIA+ soldiers cope with these challenges is by forming support networks and communities within the military. These groups can provide a safe space for members to share their experiences and receive emotional support from others who understand what they are going through. Some units and commands are also taking steps to create more inclusive policies and practices that allow LGBTQIA+ soldiers to express themselves fully without fear of repercussions.

Despite these efforts, however, there is still much work to be done to ensure that all LGBTQIA+ soldiers feel comfortable and supported in their environment. This requires ongoing education and training for both leaders and troops to better understand the unique needs and perspectives of this group and to create an environment where everyone feels welcomed and valued regardless of their identity.

Navigating identity expression as an LGBTQIA+ soldier in highly structured and regulated environments presents unique challenges. By supporting each other and advocating for change within their organization, these individuals can help make the military a safer and more inclusive place for all service members.

How do LGBT soldiers navigate identity expression in highly hierarchical and rule-bound environments?

LGBT soldiers must learn how to negotiate their identities with peers, superiors, subordinates, and themselves while navigating highly structured and rigid military environments. They may have to mask their sexual orientation or gender identity to avoid discrimination, harassment, and violence from other service members and commanding officers. Some LGBT soldiers may feel isolated due to being closeted while others experience acceptance from their colleagues.
