NAVIGATING IDENTITY AND FAITH: STRATEGIES USED BY NONBINARY ADHERENTS ACROSS RELIGIOUS COMMUNITIES

Non-binary adherents to religion face unique challenges when it comes to navigating their identities within religious communities. While some religions may be more accepting of non-binary individuals than others, there are still significant cultural and social barriers that can make it difficult for these individuals to feel like they truly belong. Non-binary people often struggle with issues related to how they present themselves physically and socially, as well as their relationship to gender norms within the larger society. In addition, many non-binary adherents also grapple with doctrinal limitations imposed by their faith traditions, which can create further tension between identity and belief.

We will explore how non-binary adherents negotiate these competing factors by examining different strategies used by individuals across various religious backgrounds. We will discuss how non-binary people navigate belonging, authenticity, and doctrinal limitations within their respective faith traditions, and what resources or support systems they rely on to help them cope with these challenges.

We will begin by looking at strategies employed by non-binary Muslims, who must contend with both Islamic teachings on gender and the broader stigma surrounding transgender identities in the Middle East. Next, we will examine how non-binary Christians navigate their identities within the context of a Christian tradition that emphasizes traditional family structures and binary gender roles.

We will explore how Jewish non-binary people navigate their spiritual identities while navigating a community that is largely secularized and highly individualistic.

Throughout our discussion, we will consider how non-binary adherents navigate their own experiences and relationships within their communities, as well as how they interact with other members of their faith tradition. By exploring the nuances of these complex dynamics, we hope to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the unique struggles faced by non-binary religious adherents.
