MYTHOLOGIZATION OF SEXUAL ORDER AND PERSONAL EROTIC IDENTITY: EXAMINING HOW RELIGION SHAPES INTIMACY

2 min read Theology

Sexuality is a crucial aspect of human life that has been influenced by various factors such as biology, society, culture, and religion. Religion has played an important role in shaping people's sexual attitudes and behaviors through mythologizing sexual order. Mythology refers to the traditional narratives of gods, heroes, and creation stories used to explain natural phenomena, social norms, and moral values. It often involves supernatural beings, superhuman powers, magic, and rituals. These narratives have shaped people's understanding of sexuality, gender roles, marriage customs, and family structures. This paper will examine how the mythologization of sexual order by religion shapes personal erotic identity.

Religion plays a significant role in regulating sexual behavior and relationships. Religious texts prescribe specific rules for intimate relationships between men and women, including who they can marry, what kind of sexual practices are acceptable, and when it is appropriate to engage in sex.

The Bible states that "a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh" (Genesis 2:24), emphasizing the importance of monogamy and fidelity within marriage. In Islam, sex outside marriage is prohibited, and Muslims must wait until marriage before having sexual intercourse. Christianity also discourages premarital sex and promotes abstinence.

The religious concept of sin has also influenced sexuality. According to the Bible, Adam and Eve sinned by disobeying God's commandment not to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, leading to their expulsion from paradise. The story suggests that sexual pleasure is associated with evil and sin, which led to the fall of humanity. This view has led many religions to impose restrictions on sexual pleasure, such as Catholicism's ban on contraception and masturbation. Such views have contributed to sexual shame and guilt, which affects individuals' perception of themselves and their sexual desires.

To what extent does the mythologization of sexual order by religion shape personal erotic identity?

Erotic identity refers to one's perception of their sexual orientation, gender roles, and sexual behavior. Religious belief systems often include certain rules about appropriate sexual behaviors, including proscriptions against premarital sex, homosexuality, or promiscuity. While these normative expectations may provide structure for individuals' sexual identities, they can also be problematic when people feel pressured to conform to them despite not feeling comfortable doing so.
