LGBTQ+ YOUTH FACE NEW FORMS OF CYBERBULLYING IN HYBRID AND VIRTUAL REALITY PLATFORMS

Cyberbullying of LGBTQ+ Youth in Immersive Digital Environments

Cyberbullying is an increasing concern among LGBTQ+ youth who are often targeted for their gender identities and sexual orientations. As immersive, hybrid, and AIâ€'mediated digital environments proliferate, there are new forms of harm that can emerge which must be addressed to ensure community resilience.

One such example is the rise of virtual reality (VR) platforms where users can interact with each other in simulated spaces. This creates opportunities for cyberbullies to target vulnerable individuals using avatars that do not reflect their true identity.

They might create an alter ego that appears to be heterosexual and then engage in harassing behavior towards LGBTQ+ youth, leading to feelings of isolation and depression.

Another form of harm is the spread of misinformation through chatbots powered by artificial intelligence (AI). Chatbots may be programmed to respond with hateful or discriminatory language when asked about LGBTQ+ issues, perpetuating stereotypes and reinforcing negative attitudes.

Social media algorithms may prioritize posts containing homophobic or transphobic content, amplifying it further.

To mitigate these risks, communities should establish safeguards such as moderated chatrooms and VR guidelines. Educational resources should be developed to promote healthy interactions online and combat prejudice.

Social media companies need to take action against hate speech and work closely with LGBTQ+ organizations to develop inclusive policies.

It is also essential to examine how these new digital environments impact intimacy and relationships. While some individuals find solace in anonymous online dating apps and virtual meetups, others may become targets of cyber-stalking and sexual exploitation. The use of biometric authentication and encrypted messaging can help protect privacy while maintaining a sense of connection and support.

Cyberbullying of LGBTQ+ youth requires a proactive approach to identify and address emerging forms of harm. By setting frameworks now, we can create safer spaces for all individuals to explore their identities and build meaningful connections online.
