LGBTQ COMMUNITY: HOW ALGORITHMS IMPACT QUEER SOLIDARITY FORMATION ON DIGITAL PLATFORMS enIT FR DE PL PT RU AR JA ES

3 min read Queer

In this era of digitalization, it has become easier for individuals to connect through social media platforms that have revolutionized the way people communicate and share ideas and experiences. Social media has changed the way people perceive themselves and their identity, including the LGBTQ community. Online spaces are increasingly used by queer persons to form communities and build solidarity.

There is a need to question whether online interaction can facilitate or hinder the development of queer solidarity, especially when algorithms intervene in the process. This article explores how digital platforms facilitate or hinder the formation of queer solidarity while highlighting the role of algorithms in shaping these interactions.

We will examine how digital platforms provide a safe space for queer persons to interact and form meaningful connections. With more visibility comes a sense of belonging, reducing the feeling of isolation experienced by many who identify as LGBTQ.

Dating apps such as Grindr, Tinder, OkCupid, and Bumble allow queer individuals to meet each other without fear of judgment from heteronormative societies. These apps enable users to be open about their sexual orientation and gender identities, which may otherwise be met with hostility. Besides, they offer an opportunity to explore one's self-expression through the use of symbols and emojis to express one's emotions.

Online platforms provide accessibility and convenience, allowing members of the LGBTQ community to connect anytime, anywhere globally. These virtual environments make it possible for queer persons to find like-minded peers who understand them better than those in their physical surroundings, creating a community that supports each other regardless of geographical boundaries. Online groups such as MeetUp, Facebook, Reddit, and Discord provide a platform where queer persons can share ideas and experiences, learn new skills, and promote social justice causes. Digital spaces have enabled queer people to organize and mobilize against discrimination, especially when seeking legal protection.

In 2015, the BlackLivesMatter campaign on Twitter gained global attention, providing a platform for protestors to voice their anger over police brutality against Black communities while challenging racism and homophobia.

There are concerns about how algorithms shape interactions between queer persons, hindering solidarity building. Algorithms are designed to prioritize personalized content based on past user behavior and preferences, making it difficult to engage in meaningful conversations outside one's comfort zone or interest. This means that queer individuals cannot easily interact with people from diverse backgrounds, limiting opportunities for learning and growth.

Algorithms can reinforce existing prejudices, promoting stereotypes and negative representations of queer persons through advertisements, memes, and stories shared by others. Such misrepresentations may create a feeling of marginalization, reducing the chances of forming solidarity within the LGBTQ community.

Digital platforms play a significant role in facilitating queer solidarity but have been criticized for limiting interaction and hindering the formation of genuine connections. While some argue that these platforms offer a safe space for expression, others suggest that they impose limits and reinforce stereotypes. Nevertheless, digital spaces should be used responsibly, avoiding the pitfalls that undermine our efforts towards social justice. Queer communities must continue to use online platforms positively to advocate for diversity, inclusion, and equality in society.

How do digital platforms facilitate or hinder the development of queer solidarity, and what role do algorithms play in shaping these interactions?

Digital platforms have been instrumental in facilitating the formation of various queer communities online where people can connect with each other irrespective of their geographic locations. These platforms offer a safe space for individuals to interact freely and express themselves openly, thereby increasing their social support network and feelings of belongingness. Furthermore, such platforms provide access to information about resources and support groups that cater specifically to queer individuals.
