LGBT INDIVIDUALS WHY WE NEED LAWS PROTECTING THEM FROM DISCRIMINATION

2 min read Trans

LGBT individuals are those who identify themselves with one of the following four categories: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender.

The question of how to classify people based on their gender and sexual orientation is an important one for society. This classification is often done through social institutions such as marriage, family, education, workplace, and religion.

There are many ethical issues that arise from these social institutions.

Some religious groups believe that being gay or lesbian is wrong because it goes against their interpretation of scripture. They may see homosexuality as sinful behavior that will lead to damnation if unrepented. In contrast, secularists do not care about what the Bible says but rather focus on whether a person's actions match his/her beliefs and desires. In addition, LGBT individuals face discrimination at school and at work because they cannot be legally married like heterosexuals.

LGBT individuals have been denied access to healthcare insurance benefits, housing assistance programs, employment opportunities, adoption rights, and other forms of social support. They also suffer from harassment and violence due to their sexual identities. It is estimated that transgender individuals face more than twice the rate of physical assault compared to cisgendered individuals (cisgenders). The lack of acceptance by others leads to mental health problems among LGBT individuals which include depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), suicidal ideation, substance abuse, and self-harm. These negative consequences can cause them to feel isolated and alienated from society.

There are those who argue that people should be allowed to express themselves freely without fear of persecution or discrimination. Some say that we need laws protecting LGBT individuals from such treatment so that they can live normal lives just like everyone else. Others say that this would only encourage promiscuity and immorality within society. Still, others believe that gay marriage should remain illegal while homophobia remains legal.

The embodiment and self-identification of LGBT individuals raises many ethical questions about how we view gender and sexual orientation. While some argue that it should not matter what someone does in private as long as he/she doesn't hurt anyone, others claim that these behaviors should be condemned because they go against natural law or religious beliefs.

Whether you agree with one side or another depends on your own values and beliefs.

What ethical considerations emerge when discussing the embodiment and self-identification of LGBT individuals?

Research on sexual identity has revealed that many lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people have faced discrimination, stigmatization, prejudice, and violence due to their sexual orientation or gender identity throughout history. This social context can lead to feelings of shame, guilt, and low self-esteem among LGBT individuals, which may affect their mental health and sense of belonging in society.
