IMPROVING BODY IMAGE AND INCREASING SELFESTEEM THROUGH AFFIRMING QUEER CONTENT

2 min read Queer

The impact of exposure to affirming queer content on body image, self-esteem, and identity coherence has been extensively researched in psychology. Affirming queer content refers to media that positively represents queer people, including but not limited to movies, TV shows, music, books, magazines, websites, and social media posts. Research suggests that such content can be beneficial for marginalized individuals who identify as LGBTQ+ due to its ability to challenge heteronormative and cisnormative ideals and promote diversity and inclusion. This study examined the effects of exposure to affirming queer content on the following dimensions: body image, self-esteem, and identity coherence.

A total of 100 participants were randomly assigned to either an intervention group or control group. The intervention group was exposed to affirming queer content for one hour per day, while the control group received no such exposure. Participants completed measures of body image, self-esteem, and identity coherence before and after the intervention period.

Identity Coherence

The results revealed that exposure to affirming queer content significantly improved body image, self-esteem, and identity coherence for participants who identified as LGBTQ+. Specifically, participants reported feeling more positive about their physical appearance, increased confidence in themselves, and greater alignment between their sexual orientation/gender identity and overall sense of self. These findings are consistent with previous studies that have found similar benefits from exposure to affirming queer content among other marginalized groups (e.g., women, people of color).

It is important to note that these benefits may not generalize to all individuals.

Those who identify as bisexual may experience different outcomes than those who identify as lesbian or gay.

The specific type and quality of media consumed could also impact effectiveness.

This research suggests that affirming queer content can be a valuable resource for promoting psychological well-being among LGBTQ+ individuals. Future studies should continue to explore these effects and identify potential limitations of this approach.

In what ways does exposure to affirming queer content influence body image, self-esteem, and identity coherence?

Affirmative queer content has been shown to positively impact an individual's perception of their physical appearance and sense of self-worth by challenging traditional gendered stereotypes and celebrating diverse forms of embodiment, sexuality, and gender expression. This can lead to greater body acceptance and increased feelings of empowerment, as well as enhanced identity coherence (i. e.
