IMPACT OF OPERATIONAL TRAUMA ON SEXUALITY: DEFINING SEXUAL FUNCTION IN THE CONTEXT OF OPERATIONAL STRESS.

The impact of operational trauma on sexual behavior has been studied extensively for decades. Operational stress is defined as "a psychological state that can be induced by an excessive amount of pressure from the environment" (Brown et al., 2019, p. 47) and may lead to various negative health outcomes including anxiety, depression, substance abuse, sleep disturbance, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and suicide (Ramchand & Pescosolido, 2020).

Sexuality is the totality of human feelings and behaviors associated with gender identity and biology. It involves physical attraction, desire, arousal, intimacy, attachment, and reproduction (Tiefer, 2015).

It also encompasses emotional and social aspects such as romantic love, commitment, trust, vulnerability, power dynamics, and communication skills (Goldstein, 2018; Tiefer, 2015). Sexual dysfunction is the inability to achieve or maintain satisfaction during sexual activity due to psychological or physical factors (Khanna et al., 2021). It has profound consequences on mental and physical health, self-esteem, and quality of life (Fisher & D'Aloisio, 2007).

Operational trauma affects sexual behavior through four main mechanisms: impairments in cognitive processes, changes in hormonal levels, alterations in brain structure and function, and disruptions of autonomic nervous system regulation (Hayward et al., 2013). These factors can cause problems with sexual interest and arousal, difficulties with orgasm and ejaculation, and decreased pleasure during sex (Liu et al., 2021).

Exposure to operational stress leads to a reduced perception of threat, which may result in more risky sexual behavior, including unprotected sex and promiscuity (Smith et al., 2019). Operational trauma can also influence relational prioritization by increasing feelings of loneliness and isolation, making individuals less likely to seek out intimacy (Ramchand & Pescosolido, 2020).

Research shows that operational stress has a negative impact on sexual behavior and relational prioritization.

There are many potential pathways for intervention and treatment, such as counseling, medication, and mindfulness practices. By understanding the link between operational trauma and sexual health, we can develop effective strategies to promote resilience and wellbeing among people affected by this type of trauma.

How does exposure to extreme operational stress influence sexual behavior and relational prioritization?

Exposure to extreme operational stress can impact an individual's sexual behavior and relational prioritization in various ways. Research has shown that individuals who experience trauma may have difficulty regulating their emotions, which can lead to difficulties with intimacy and interpersonal communication. This can result in decreased interest in sex and difficulty establishing and maintaining relationships. Additionally, experiencing stressful events can cause changes in hormone levels, which can affect libido and fertility.
