According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, one out of every ten students experiences unwanted sexual contact while attending school. While there is much research into the immediate impacts of such incidents, there have been few studies examining the long-term consequences. This study aims to explore the potential long-term psychological ramifications of unreported sexual harassment and assault in academic environments.
Methodology
The study was conducted through semi-structured interviews with 15 college students who had experienced some form of nonconsensual touching or sexual activity during their education but did not report it to authorities. Participants were recruited via social media and snowball sampling methods. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, coded, and analyzed using thematic analysis.
Results
The findings suggest that unreported sexual abuse can lead to feelings of shame, guilt, self-blame, and fear. Many participants felt like they were at fault for what happened, even though they did nothing wrong. Some reported experiencing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), including flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, depression, hypervigilance, and avoidance behavior. Others struggled with low self-esteem, difficulty trusting others, and problems in romantic relationships.
Discussion
These findings highlight the importance of reporting sexual abuse when it occurs. By addressing the issue, victims can begin the healing process and receive support from professionals trained to help them cope with trauma.
Reporting can help prevent future instances of abuse by holding perpetrators accountable and raising awareness about the prevalence of these crimes.
Many victims may be hesitant to come forward due to fear of stigma, retaliation, or lack of confidence in the justice system. Institutional policies should be put in place to create a safe and supportive environment where students feel comfortable speaking out without fear of repercussions.
