HOW TO INTERNALIZE SEXUAL MORALITY IN A FRAGMENTED RELIGIOUS LANDSCAPE?

3 min read Theology

Religious belief has always been a part of human life. Throughout history, religions have played an important role in shaping the moral code of many civilizations.

With the rise of late modern society, there is now a lack of consensus among people regarding which religion to follow and which values to adhere to. This has led to fragmentation of moral authority, where different religions offer their own sets of commandments about various aspects of life. One such aspect is sexual behavior, which has also seen significant changes due to advancements in technology, media, and education. In this essay, I will discuss how religious believers internalize sexual commandments as personal convictions rather than external obligations in a world where they are bombarded with conflicting messages from multiple sources.

It is essential to understand that there is no one universal set of morals that all religions agree upon. Each religion has its own set of rules and regulations regarding what constitutes acceptable sexual behavior.

Islam prohibits premarital sex while Christianity permits it under certain circumstances. Similarly, Hinduism allows homosexuality but Buddhism does not. As a result, it becomes difficult for people to know which rules to follow.

The rise of late modern society has created a sense of freedom and individualism among people. They feel more empowered to make decisions based on their own values and beliefs instead of blindly following someone else's commands. This means that even if they believe in a particular religion, they may choose to interpret its teachings differently or ignore them altogether. In other words, they internalize sexual commandments as personal convictions because they want to live according to their own understanding of right and wrong.

The internet and social media have made it easier for people to access information and connect with others who share similar views. There are many websites and apps dedicated to dating and hookups, making it easier than ever before for individuals to find partners without worrying about societal norms or moral standards. At the same time, online pornography is readily available, leading some religious believers to question the validity of traditional commandments. All these factors contribute to an environment where people can choose to do whatever they please without feeling like they must answer to anyone else.

The fragmentation of moral authority in late modern societies has led to a situation where people tend to view sexual commandments as personal convictions rather than external obligations. While this may seem liberating at first glance, it can also lead to confusion and chaos, especially when different religions offer conflicting advice. It is up to each individual to decide how they want to approach sex and relationships, but they should be aware of the consequences of ignoring established traditions and norms.
