HOW TO ADDRESS SEXUAL IMPOTENCE WITHOUT BREAKING SOCIAL STIGMA?

4 min read Theology

Sexual impotence can be defined as an issue where men cannot achieve or sustain an erection for sexual intercourse. Impotence may happen due to several factors such as physical issues like heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, or nerve problems. It is also observed that men who have psychological conditions like anxiety, depression, stress and trauma are more likely to experience impotence. According to a survey conducted by the National Health Service (NHS) UK, 1 out of every 5 males suffers from impotency. The stigma associated with impotence affects their lives socially, mentally and physically. While there are treatments available for it, many people still consider it a taboo subject and avoid talking about it. The society has always been reluctant to accept this condition, and most religious groups shun it because they see it as unnatural.

There is evidence that religion plays a significant role in how we view sexual dysfunction or impotence.

Religion's View on Sexual Dysfunction or Impotence

Religion has always played a crucial role in the beliefs and values of different cultures. It shapes our views regarding sex, relationships, intimacy, and marriage. In some religions, sex is considered sacred while others believe it should occur solely within the confines of marriage. Some religious leaders believe that any form of sex outside marriage is sinful and disrespectful to God. Consequently, sexual dysfunctions, including impotence, are seen as signs of punishment from God or Satan. People who suffer from them are often labeled immoral and sinners. Therefore, they face rejection, ridicule, and isolation from their families and communities.

Islam considers sex outside marriage haram, forbidden, and frowned upon. As such, people with sexual dysfunctions may be shunned by their family and friends for being 'impure.'

Those who cannot have children due to impotence can also be viewed as cursed by God. This stigma causes social pressure on men to conform to societal norms and expectations leading to depression and anxiety.

Religious Practices and Beliefs on Sexual Dysfunction

Some religions use rituals, prayers, and fasting to cure sexual dysfunction or impotence.

Hinduism believes that penis size plays a significant role in fertility and virility. As such, many men participate in various rituals like yoga, Ayurveda, and massage therapy to increase their penis size and improve sexual performance. Moreover, some cultures practice traditional herbal remedies and medications to treat impotency. In African culture, herbs like Yohimbe, ginger, and saffron are used to enhance sexual function. Other religions consider sexual dysfunction as a curse from the devil and require exorcism to heal it. Some even prescribe prayer and fasting to expel the demons causing the problem. Consequently, men become dependent on religious leaders instead of seeking medical help, which further exacerbates their condition.

Acceptance of Impotence Among Religious Groups

Some religious groups accept sexual dysfunction or impotence and offer support and guidance to sufferers. Christianity is one religion where this issue has been addressed openly. They believe that it is a physical condition caused by natural factors and not spiritual ones. Therefore, they encourage people with impotence to seek medical advice rather than using faith-based solutions. The Catholic Church also acknowledges sexual dysfunctions and encourages its priests to counsel members with such issues. They believe that sex is a natural part of life and should be treated medically if need be. In Islamic countries, Muslims are more accepting of sexual dysfunctions compared to other societies.

Saudi Arabia allows couples to undergo artificial insemination if a man cannot impregnate his wife due to impotence.

Many Islamic scholars have written articles addressing this issue without shaming those affected.

Religiosity shapes how society views sexual dysfunctions or impotence. While some cultures see it as punishment from God or Satan and stigmatize sufferers, others use religious practices to treat it.

There are religions like Christianity and Islam that accept sexual dysfunction as a natural occurrence and urge members to seek medical treatment.

The attitude towards sexual dysfunction depends on the culture and belief system of the community.

How does religiosity shape the stigmatization or acceptance of sexual dysfunction or impotence?

The degree to which people are religious has been found to influence how they perceive and experience sexual dysfunction and impotence. Religious individuals may feel shame or guilt about their condition due to cultural beliefs that equate sex with sin or immorality. Additionally, some religions emphasize abstinence before marriage or discourage non-procreative forms of sex altogether.
