HOW SILENT ACTIVISM CHALLENGES NORMS AND PROMOTES POSITIVE CHANGE

In modern society, we are constantly bombarded with messages about who we should be and how we should act. From advertising to social media to the news, there is a constant pressure to conform to certain norms and standards. This can lead to feelings of anxiety, depression, and self-doubt. One way to combat this pressure is through the practice of silent activism. Silent activism involves resisting the urge to speak up and instead taking action through non-verbal means. In this paper, I will discuss the ways that silence can be an ethical response to oppressive frameworks.

Silence is often seen as a passive or negative quality, but it can also be used as a powerful tool for change. By refusing to participate in oppressive narratives, individuals can challenge the status quo and create new ways of seeing the world.

When a person of color is confronted with racist remarks or actions, they may choose to remain silent rather than engaging in conversation. This does not mean that they agree with the behavior, but it allows them to assert their own voice and experience without falling into the trap of being labeled as angry or aggressive. Similarly, when someone experiences sexual harassment or assault, they may choose to stay quiet rather than reporting it immediately. This gives them time to process the event and come to terms with what happened before speaking out publicly.

By remaining silent, individuals can refuse to participate in narratives that perpetuate systems of power and privilege. They can resist the idea that they must explain themselves or justify their existence. Instead, they can use their silence to create space for themselves and others who are marginalized. When people see that certain behaviors are not acceptable, they are less likely to engage in them. Silence can also create a sense of solidarity among those who have been silenced or ignored by society. By coming together in silence, these individuals can find strength and comfort in each other's company.

There are limitations to this approach. Silent activism can only go so far. If everyone remains silent, then no progress will be made toward changing oppressive frameworks.

Some people may feel isolated and alone if they cannot speak openly about their experiences. It is important for those who practice silent activism to seek support from like-minded individuals and find ways to express themselves creatively.

Silence can be an ethical response to oppressive frameworks. By refusing to participate in narratives that harm others, individuals can challenge systems of power and privilege.

It should not be seen as a replacement for more direct forms of activism. Rather, it should be used as one tool in a larger strategy for creating change.

Can silence also be ethical — a refusal to narrate oneself within oppressive frameworks?

In today's world where communication has become so easy through different mediums like social media platforms, it is quite hard for someone to be silent but that doesn't mean that one cannot choose to keep mum. A person can still choose not to speak their mind in the presence of others even if they are constantly surrounded by them. This may sound unusual as talking gives us a sense of belongingness with others but there are many instances when people do this intentionally or unintentionally.
