HOW SEXUALIZATION AFFECTS PERCEIVED LEADER EFFECTIVENESS IN THE WORKPLACE?

Sexualization is becoming increasingly prevalent in the workplace, but its effects on leadership are still understudied. This study aims to explore how sexualized perceptions impact leaders' evaluations, credibility, and ethical authority. It is based on the literature review that examines the relationship between perceptions of women's leadership styles and their effectiveness in different contexts. Leadership is evaluated differently depending on whether it is perceived as masculine or feminine; female leaders are more likely than male leaders to be seen as less effective when displaying traditionally feminine traits. Female leaders who challenge traditional gender roles may face backlash from both men and women, which can undermine their effectiveness.

There is evidence that certain types of sexualized behavior can enhance leader effectiveness.

Some research suggests that sexualized dress codes can increase followers' trust and commitment to their leaders. But this finding is controversial, as sexualized perceptions can also hinder leaders' ability to build relationships with their subordinates.

This study shows that leaders need to balance their own self-presentation with their followers' expectations to achieve success.

This study utilizes a mixed-method approach involving interviews with senior executives and focus groups with lower-level employees. The results suggest that sexualized perceptions influence leaders' evaluation, credibility, and ethical authority. Leaders who are perceived as sexually desirable may have an easier time gaining power and status, but they may also be seen as untrustworthy and immoral. In contrast, leaders who emphasize their professional competence and integrity may be seen as more effective. This suggests that leaders must carefully consider how they present themselves to maintain their credibility and ethical authority.

Sexualized perceptions can positively and negatively impact leaders' evaluations, credibility, and ethical authority. To succeed in the workplace, leaders must find ways to balance their personal presentation with their followers' expectations and needs. By doing so, they can create a positive work environment that values individual differences and promotes mutual respect.

In what ways do sexualized perceptions influence leadership evaluation, credibility, and ethical authority?

According to research, leaders who are perceived as sexually attractive are more likely to be evaluated positively for their leadership performance than those who are not (e. g. , Dion & Berscheid, 1986). This may lead to an assumption that sexualized perceptions of leaders can enhance their credibility and ethical authority.
