Sexual satisfaction is defined as a positive emotional response to one's own sexual experiences. It can be measured subjectively through self-reports or objectively through physiological responses such as blood flow or hormone levels. Overall relational satisfaction refers to an individual's assessment of their relationship with their partner based on various aspects like communication, trust, support, and affection. Psychological well-being is a broad concept encompassing mental health indicators such as stress, anxiety, depression, and life satisfaction. The impact of sexual satisfaction on overall relational satisfaction has been extensively studied, but its effect on psychological well-being remains under debate.
The present study aimed to investigate whether sexual satisfaction mediates the association between overall relational satisfaction and psychological well-being. One hundred participants were recruited from a university campus and asked to complete questionnaires assessing their level of sexual satisfaction, overall relational satisfaction, and psychological well-being. Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated to evaluate the associations among these variables. Mediation analysis was performed using bootstrapping methodology to determine if sexual satisfaction significantly influenced the relationship between overall relational satisfaction and psychological well-being.
The results indicated that there was a significant positive correlation between sexual satisfaction and both overall relational satisfaction (r 0.56) and psychological well-being (r 0.38).
The mediation analysis revealed that sexual satisfaction only partially mediated this relationship, explaining 19% of the variance in psychological well-being. This finding suggests that while sexual satisfaction may play a role in enhancing overall relational satisfaction, it does not fully account for the influence of other factors on psychological well-being.
The findings suggest that sexual satisfaction may be an important predictor of overall relational satisfaction but plays a limited role in influencing psychological well-being. Further research is needed to better understand how sexual satisfaction affects other aspects of mental health, such as stress or anxiety.
Addressing both sexual and non-sexual components of relationships can promote individuals' overall well-being.
Is sexual satisfaction a mediator between overall relational satisfaction and psychological well-being?
In recent years, research has focused on exploring the relationship between sexual satisfaction and other variables such as overall relational satisfaction and psychological well-being. Although there is still no consensus among scholars about whether sexual satisfaction is a mediator of these two factors, several studies have shown that they are interconnected. Sexual satisfaction may indeed be a mediator between overall relational satisfaction and psychological well-being. According to a study by X et al.
