HOW SEXUAL INTERACTION CAN AFFECT EMOTIONAL INTIMACY IN ADOLESCENTS AND THEIR RELATIONSHIPS

When adolescence is considered to be an important phase wherein a child transitions into an adult, it can be said that this stage plays a crucial role in shaping up one's personality.

The emerging teenagers have been found to indulge themselves in various activities that are often harmful to them. One such activity that has been gaining rapid popularity among the youth is the idea that having sex could help strengthen their bonds with each other. This notion can be traced back to the fact that human beings are social animals and need companionship from others. The desire for intimacy makes individuals look out for opportunities to establish close relationships with their counterparts. As such, when it comes to developing strong emotional connectivity, they would tend to seek ways and means through which they can express how they feel without being judged. The most accessible option available is through sexual interaction. Hence, there arises a kind of relational fragility whereby teens consider sex as the best tool for emotional communication.

It has also been discovered that this practice leads to many negative impacts on the teenagers who engage in it regularly.

When two people are involved in a physical relationship, it is more likely that they will experience deep-rooted insecurities about themselves due to the constant fear of losing the partner. In addition, there might be the risk of experiencing guilt if they feel guilty after the sexual act is over. Such situations lead to feelings of vulnerability that make them emotionally drained and weakened. This way, they end up compromising on their integrity by succumbing to peer pressure or societal norms instead of taking independent decisions. Moreover, since there is an absence of trust between the partners, even though they might have had a healthy bond before, it becomes challenging to communicate effectively and openly. Thus, adolescents become victims of the wrong culture that considers sexual activity to be the only medium to display love towards each other.

It can be observed that the issue mentioned above is prevalent among young adults because of several factors. These include lack of effective communication skills, poor parental guidance, peer pressure, social media influence, and exposure to unhealthy content such as pornography. Therefore, it would not be incorrect to say that sex is an addiction for these individuals who see no better alternative to express how they feel at this particular stage of life.

What relational fragility develops when adolescents see sex as their most immediate and accessible tool for emotional communication?

In recent years, research has shown that young people increasingly perceive sexual relationships as their primary means of expressing themselves emotionally with others. This trend is often attributed to the rise of social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat, where young people can easily find sexual partners online, exchange explicit photos and videos, and engage in flirtatious chats without having to leave their homes.
