HOW ROMANTIC MEDIA IMPACTS ADOLESCENTS' EXPECTATIONS ABOUT PHYSICAL RELATIONSHIPS

This research investigates how continuous digital exposure to idealized romantic imagery impacts adolescents' expectations for physical relationships. The research focuses on a sample size of 20 adolescent participants aged between 14 and 18 years old who have been exposed to romantic media content on social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, Snapchat, Twitter, Reddit, and Pinterest. To conduct this study, a mixed methodology approach was used, combining both quantitative and qualitative methods. A survey questionnaire was administered to collect data on their frequency of usage of these platforms, their preferences, and behavioral patterns. In addition, interviews were conducted through Skype to obtain more detailed responses from the participants.

The results suggest that constant exposure to romantic imagery through various media has negative effects on the adolescents' expectations regarding physical relationships. This is due to the fact that they see pictures of idealized couples who are always kissing, holding hands, or engaging in intimate acts without having to work hard for it. The resultant effect is that they begin to believe that every relationship should be perfect, with no disagreements or fights. They also feel pressured to meet these unrealistic standards and may become frustrated if they cannot live up to them.

They start to compare themselves to the people they see online, leading to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem.

They might compare their body shape or skin tone with those seen in the images and feel inferior.

The findings indicate that continuous digital exposure to idealized romantic imagery impacts adolescents' expectations for physical relationships by setting unrealistic standards and creating unhealthy comparisons between themselves and others. It is important for parents to monitor their children's social media usage and help them develop healthy attitudes towards relationships.

How does continuous digital exposure to idealized romantic imagery impact adolescents' expectations for physical relationships?

Continuous digital exposure to idealized romantic imagery can negatively impact adolescents' expectations for physical relationships by creating unrealistic standards and leading them to feel dissatisfied with their current partners. Adolescents may begin to compare themselves to these images and develop unrealistic expectations for what physical intimacy should look like, which can lead to disappointment when real-life interactions do not meet those standards.
