HOW RELIGION INFLUENCES PARENTAL REJECTION OF LGBT YOUTH AND ITS IMPACT ON THEIR MENTAL HEALTH enIT FR DE PL TR PT RU AR CN ES

LGBT individuals face discrimination in various aspects of their lives due to their sexual orientation or gender identity, including parental rejection, which has been linked to negative health outcomes such as depression, anxiety, and suicidality.

Little research has examined how religious beliefs influence this rejection, particularly in relation to mental health. This study aimed to explore the psychological, social, and emotional consequences of parental rejection motivated by religion in LGBT children and adolescents and identify interventions that could promote resilience.

Method

A systematic literature review was conducted using PsycINFO, CINAHL Plus, MEDLINE, PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases from January 1990 to December 2021. Eligible studies included quantitative and qualitative research involving LGBT individuals aged 18 years or younger who experienced parental rejection based on their sexuality or gender identity. The search strategy involved key terms related to LGBT, parenting, parental support, mental health, and resilience.

Results

Sixteen articles were included in the review, with a total sample size of 643 participants. All studies reported negative associations between parental rejection and mental health outcomes, with some also reporting increased risk-taking behaviors and lower self-esteem. Four themes emerged from the analysis: (a) the impact of religion on parental attitudes towards LGBT youth; (b) the role of culture and family values in shaping parental rejection; (c) the importance of family dynamics in promoting resilience; and (d) the potential for intervention programs to improve mental health and well-being.

Discussion

This review highlights the devastating effects of religiously motivated parental rejection on LGBT children's mental health and suggests ways to support resilience through family interventions. Future research should explore the complex interactions between religion, culture, family values, and psychological adjustment among LGBT youth. Interdisciplinary approaches are needed to address this issue and promote positive mental health outcomes.

What are the psychological, social, and emotional consequences of religiously motivated parental rejection of LGBT children, and how can interventions support resilience?

Parental rejection based on sexual orientation can have serious negative effects on LGBTQIA+ youth, as it can cause them to feel unloved, isolated, and alone. They may experience low self-esteem and depression, and they may be more likely to engage in risky behaviors such as substance abuse or suicide attempts. This can lead to poor mental health outcomes later in life.
