Religious Sexual Morality

Intersecting Power and Submission

Sexual morality is an essential part of many religions, dictating how people should behave during their most intimate moments. These rules often include strict guidelines for what is acceptable behavior and what is forbidden, with certain acts considered to be immoral and sinful. This can lead to a culture of shame and secrecy around sexuality, creating an environment where people feel ashamed of their desires and needs. At the same time, it also creates power imbalances between men and women, privileging male desire over female pleasure, and perpetuates social norms that marginalize LGBTQ+ individuals.

The intersection between religious sexual morality and power dynamics has historically been used as a tool to maintain gender roles and control the behavior of those who deviate from them.

The Catholic Church's teachings on contraception have long been used to enforce patriarchal values and maintain male dominance over reproduction. Likewise, the Quran states that sex outside of marriage is forbidden, leaving many women vulnerable to societal pressure and abuse if they do not marry young. In some cultures, this has even led to honor killings when a woman is perceived to have had premarital sex.

In addition to controlling individual behavior, religious sexual morality can also shape larger cultural narratives about sex and relationships. The Puritanical ideals promoted by Christianity in the United States have created a climate of fear and shame around sexuality, leading to high rates of STIs, unplanned pregnancy, and sexual violence. This has disproportionately impacted women and queer individuals, who are often viewed as sexual "deviants" or "temptresses."

There are ways to challenge these harmful narratives and empower people to take ownership of their sexuality. By critically examining the roots of religious sexual morality and challenging its assumptions, we can create a world where everyone has agency over their bodies and relationships. This includes recognizing the role that power and submission play in shaping our sexual identities and desires, while also affirming that pleasure is an essential part of healthy intimacy for all genders and orientations.
