HOW RELIGION ATTEMPTS TO CONTROL SEXUALITY AND WHY IT DOES NOT WORK

2 min read Theology

A common religious practice is to regulate sexual behavior through the means of prohibitions, rules, and regulations that are often perceived as unreasonable. Religions may try to control believers' sexual conduct by encouraging them to abstain from certain acts or behaviors, such as premarital sex, masturbation, homosexuality, and extramarital affairs.

These attempts can be counterproductive because they do not address the underlying causes of sexual misconduct but simply impose restrictions. Therefore, believers have developed resistance strategies against religious sexual control.

One of the most effective resistance strategies is rationalization. Believers who believe in their religion tend to develop justifications for engaging in activities considered forbidden by it.

Some Christians justify premarital sex by claiming that they will marry later; others argue that the Bible does not condemn all forms of intimacy between partners. Some Muslims who seek pleasure outside marriage rationalize that Islam allows men to have up to four wives at a time, while other followers justify watching pornography since Allah has given humans free will.

Another strategy is secrecy. Followers of religions that restrict sexual activity often conceal their actions from fellow believers. They may hide their relationships, lie about their sexual activities, or avoid attending congregations where they could get caught. They might also go to great lengths to ensure that no one finds out about their infractions, including wearing disguises or meeting secretly.

A third tactic is reinterpretation. Devotees may interpret religious texts differently than how they were initially understood, arguing that the meaning of words used was different back then. They may read verses out of context, emphasizing specific phrases over others, or use non-traditional translations of the language. This approach challenges the authority of priests and scholars who teach conservative views on sexuality.

Some believers practice selective compliance with rules. They follow certain restrictions while ignoring others.

A Christian couple might abstain from premarital sex but ignore the prohibition against contraceptives because they believe the Church's position on birth control is misguided. A Muslim man may engage in polygamy but deny his fourth wife access to his house and children because he considers polygamy an exception.

Resistance strategies develop against religious sexual control by rationalization, secrecy, reinterpretation, and selective compliance. These tactics challenge religious authorities and allow individuals to live more fulfilling lives without feeling guilty.

These approaches can be harmful if they lead to hypocrisy, self-deception, and shame.

What resistance strategies develop against religious sexual control?

Resistance strategies towards religious sexual control include various approaches such as individual actions, group activities, and political movements. Individuals may rebel by challenging authority, seeking alternative interpretations of scriptures, engaging in private behavior, and resisting conformity with social norms. Groups can gather around ideologies that advocate for freedom and equality, forming organizations that promote awareness, education, support, and activism.
