HOW POLYGAMY AFFECTS WOMENS SEXUAL AUTONOMY, SELFWORTH AND RELATIONSHIPS.

3 min read Theology

Polygamy is the practice of having more than one spouse simultaneously, where men are allowed to marry multiple wives while women can have no more than one husband. This practice has been popularized and normalized in many cultures and religions, especially Islamic ones. The idea behind this system is that it allows men to have more children, expand their social status and power, and provide for their families.

This arrangement often comes at the expense of women's autonomy, self-worth, and capacity for intimate negotiation.

One way polygamy affects women is through the sexual objectification they experience within the household. In monogamous marriages, husbands typically focus all their attention and efforts towards their partner, but in polygamous marriages, there are multiple partners who must share these resources. This means that women may feel like they are competing for attention and affection from their husband, which can lead to feelings of jealousy and resentment. It also means that they may be viewed as objects rather than individuals with unique needs and desires. Women may feel pressure to meet certain physical standards or engage in sex acts that they don't want to participate in order to keep their husband's interest.

Another way polygamy affects women is by limiting their ability to negotiate their sexual relationships. Because a man is expected to satisfy multiple partners, he may not take into account his wife's preferences or limits when it comes to sexual encounters. This can result in situations where women feel coerced into unwanted sexual activity or even abuse.

Some wives may feel pressure to perform specific acts or dress in certain ways to compete with other wives for their husband's attention.

Polygamy can impact women's sense of self-worth and value outside of their relationship. Because they are seen as part of a larger group rather than an individual, they may struggle to develop independent identities and pursue personal goals outside of marriage. This can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness, especially if their husband spends more time with one wife over another. It can also make them vulnerable to economic exploitation, as they rely on their husband's financial support and have no other source of income.

Religious justification of gendered polygamy has significant consequences for women's sexual autonomy, self-worth, and capacity for intimate negotiation. While there may be benefits to this system from the perspective of the family unit, it can come at a great cost to the individuals within it.
