One woman stated, "To me, intimacy between two people is far more important than just showing off the body." On the other hand, a man explained, "The body language and attitude in which the model holds herself has much to do with how she will appear seductive."
Femininity vs. Masculinity
When viewing erotic images created by men versus women, there are also distinct differences in the way they portray masculinity and femininity. Women often focus on capturing softness, sensuality, and delicacy, while men highlight strength, dominance, and virility. This can be seen in poses, lighting, clothing choices, and props used. As another participant noted, "I prefer the feminine type of photo where the girl seems shy but excited."

These findings reflect larger societal norms surrounding gender roles. In many cultures, women are expected to be passive and subservient partners in sexual relationships, whereas men should actively pursue and initiate sex. Therefore, it makes sense that female photographers would create images that challenge these stereotypes by focusing on intimate moments rather than physical attributes. By contrast, male photographers tend to reinforce traditional notions of masculinity by showcasing dominant males who exert control over their subjects.
