HOW LGBTQ INDIVIDUALS EXPERIENCE RELIGIOUS WORSHIP SPACES: EMOTIONS VS. INTELLECTUAL COPING STRATEGIES enIT FR DE PL TR PT RU AR JA CN ES

How does a person who identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ) experience religious worship spaces that both validate and exclude them? In this paper, I will explore how LGBTQ individuals deal with these dual tensions in different ways through emotional and intellectual means.

It is important to understand why there can be such contradictory feelings towards sacred spaces for people who identify themselves as part of the LGBTQ community. On one hand, they may feel accepted and included when attending religious services because of their spiritual connection to God and their beliefs.

They may also face discrimination or exclusion from certain aspects of worship due to societal prejudices against homosexuality or gender nonconformity. This can create an internal conflict within individuals who want to practice their faith while simultaneously affirming their identity.

To cope with this dissonance, some LGBTQ believers turn to cognitive strategies.

They may try to rationalize religious teachings about sexuality by interpreting them differently than the literal meaning, which would suggest otherwise. They might also focus on the positive messages of inclusion and love taught in scripture, while minimizing those that condemn same-sex relationships or gender fluidity. Others may seek out congregations that embrace all forms of diversity, such as Unitarian Universalist churches, Quaker meetings, or Metropolitan Community Churches.

Emotionally, many LGBTQ individuals have developed coping mechanisms to navigate sacred spaces that reject them. They may use humor, camaraderie, or a sense of community with other queer people to help buffer any negative experiences they encounter.

Some may choose to simply avoid these spaces altogether if they become too upsetting or triggering. Still, others may take it upon themselves to advocate for more inclusive policies and practices within their own faith communities, hoping to change hearts and minds over time.

Navigating sacred spaces as an LGBTQ person requires both intellectual and emotional resources. By employing various techniques to handle tension between identities and beliefs, individuals can find peace and comfort within their spiritual lives despite external pressures.

How do LGBTQ believers navigate sacred spaces that simultaneously affirm and marginalize their identities, and what cognitive-emotional strategies are employed?

LGBTQ believers encounter significant challenges when navigating religious communities that often condemn nonheteronormative sexual orientations and gender identities as sinful or unacceptable. Many turn to cognitive-emotional strategies such as self-affirmation, rationalization, and compartmentalization to manage these tensions and maintain faith in their religion.
