It is important to understand that there are different levels of religiosity, from strongly devout to non-religious individuals who may hold some beliefs but do not practice them actively. While some people may have strong religious beliefs about sex, others may be more lax in their approach. Internalized religious morality refers to the personal sense of right and wrong that an individual has based on their understanding of religious teachings and cultural norms surrounding sex. This can influence sexual behavior, such as what kinds of activities they engage in, with whom they engage in those activities, and how often they engage in them.
Someone with a strict religious upbringing may feel guilty about masturbating or having premarital sex, while someone else may see no issue with these behaviors.
Fantasies can also be influenced by internalized religious morality. Someone with a conservative view of sexuality may feel guilty or shameful for having erotic thoughts, while another person may not experience the same level of self-criticism. The type of fantasies someone has can depend on their cultural background and religious teachings, as well as personal experiences.
Someone raised in a Muslim culture where public displays of affection are frowned upon may find it difficult to imagine being intimate in front of others.
Relational intimacy is also affected by internalized religious morality. Individuals may feel more comfortable expressing themselves sexually with partners who share similar beliefs, which can make it harder to connect with those who don't.
Religious teachings around marriage and family life can shape expectations for relationships, including monogamy and exclusivity. Someone who values traditional gender roles may have difficulty establishing a close bond with a partner who doesn't hold the same views.
