HOW GENDER NORMS IMPACT SELFEXPRESSION FOR LGBT MILITARY PERSONNEL

2 min read Trans

The way that society views gender has significant implications for how individuals express themselves within their community. These societal norms can create pressures to adhere to certain behaviors and attitudes that are considered appropriate for each gender. This is especially true when it comes to LGBT individuals who may experience additional pressure due to social stigma surrounding their identity. In this essay, I will explore how these societal expectations impact the self-expression of LGBT service members.

Society expects men to be strong, aggressive, and independent while women should be more emotional and nurturing. These expectations often place restrictions on both genders, but they have particularly harmful effects on those who do not fit into traditional male/female roles.

If an individual identifies as nonbinary or transgender, they may face criticism or ridicule for their perceived gender expression. The same goes for LGBT individuals who defy gender norms. This pressure to conform can lead to mental health issues like anxiety or depression.

LGBT individuals face unique challenges when it comes to military life. They must navigate a culture that emphasizes heterosexuality and masculinity in its values and traditions. Service members who do not meet these standards risk being ostracized or even discharged from their units. As a result, many LGBT service members feel isolated and alone within their units and struggle with feelings of inadequacy.

Despite these difficulties, there are ways for LGBT service members to express themselves without compromising their identity. Some choose to join LGBT groups within the military to connect with others who share similar experiences. Others may participate in events designed specifically for LGBT service members. Still, others find support through online communities where they can discuss issues related to gender and sexuality.

Societal expectations of masculinity and femininity play a significant role in how LGBT service members express themselves. By acknowledging and addressing this issue, we can create a more inclusive environment where all members feel comfortable being true to themselves regardless of their identity.

How do societal expectations of masculinity and femininity affect LGBT service members' self-expression?

Society often expects individuals to conform to gender norms that may not be aligned with their identity. This can lead to feelings of isolation and dissonance for those who identify as LGBT. In the military environment, where physical appearance is an important factor in how one is perceived, this pressure to conform can be especially strong. Some LGBT service members may feel pressure to hide their true selves in order to fit in and avoid stigma.
