HOW DOES SEXUAL ATTRACTION INFLUENCE INFORMAL LEADERSHIP IN TEAMS?

The concept of leader is a broad one which can be defined as an individual who leads, guides, or directs others towards accomplishment of shared goals.

There are different types of leaderships styles that can be adopted by individuals depending on their own characteristics, qualities, personality traits, environment, etc. Leadership can be formal where it is given to someone according to his/her position or role in an organization and it also includes informal leadership. Informal leadership refers to the type of leadership which is based on charisma, influence, and personal qualities rather than formal title, job description, authority, power, and control. According to studies, sexual attraction plays a major role in the emergence of informal leadership within teams because of its ability to create social connections among team members leading them to trust each other more and thus sharing ideas, responsibilities, and resources.

Sexual Attraction

Sexual attraction is a basic drive that motivates people to engage in intimate physical, emotional, and romantic relationships with the opposite sex. It is driven by hormones such as testosterone and estrogen which are present in both males and females. Sexual attraction can be influenced by factors like physical appearance, body language, facial expressions, voice, smell, touch, and many other factors. People who find themselves attractive are likely to feel confident and have higher self-esteem levels which help them build better relationships with others (Haug & Hefner, 2018). Moreover, sexual attraction helps in building strong bonds between individuals which can lead to stronger relationship development. Studies have shown that there is a direct link between sexual attraction and trust which is a key aspect for effective teamwork.

Role of Sexual Attraction in Informal Leadership Emergence

Individuals who experience sexual attraction towards their teammates tend to form close bonds and develop strong relationships which leads to increased trust among them. Such individuals usually share information freely and openly which is necessary for building trust. When trust is built on mutual grounds it leads to greater collaboration among team members as they start believing in one another's opinions and decisions making it easier for leaders to emerge informally within teams.

If there is no sexual attraction then the level of trust might not be high enough for effective leadership development. Hence, sexual attraction plays a significant role in developing trust and hence creating an environment conducive for informal leadership development.

Sexual attraction also helps in breaking down barriers of communication and creates a sense of familiarity which makes it easy for individuals to express their views without any hesitation. This leads to better coordination among team members leading to successful completion of tasks. As per research, sexually attracted individuals spend more time together than those who do not experience such feelings due to which they become more aware of each other's strengths and weaknesses, preferences, likings and disliking etc. This helps in understanding individual needs and abilities which is crucial for the leader-follower dynamic. Moreover, individuals who are sexually attracted to each other have an affinity for each other that further motivates them to achieve their goals faster than others (Haug & Hefner, 2018). It is because when people like each other, they try to impress each other by sharing their ideas and working hard towards achieving common goals. Hence, sexual attraction can help in accelerating the rate at which goals are achieved thereby increasing team productivity.

Sexual attraction has a major role in informal leadership emergence as it builds strong relationships, increases trust, facilitates effective collaboration, and accelerates goal achievement. When individuals find themselves attractive to one another, they tend to form stronger bonds resulting in increased trust which is necessary for effective leadership development. Therefore, managers should create an atmosphere where individuals feel comfortable around each other so that they develop mutual admiration for one another. Leaders must encourage open communication and interaction between individuals so that trust is developed which ultimately results in better team performance.
