HOW DOES MEDIA CONSUMPTION AFFECT TEENAGERS SEXUALITY AND BODY IMAGE?

2 min read Gay

Media depictions of idealized sexual performance and social status play a significant role in shaping how young people perceive their own bodies and desirability.

A study found that exposure to explicit media images of women's bodies increased men's body dissatisfaction.

Women who viewed these images felt more pressure to conform to beauty ideals and engaged in greater levels of self-objectification. Another study revealed that teenagers who consume pornography are more likely to engage in risky behaviors like unprotected sex, which can lead to STIs and unwanted pregnancy. The effects of media consumption on adolescents' sexual attitudes, behavior, and mental health have been well documented, but what about imitation? Can media figures influence their self-perception and normative sexual expectations as they grow up? To explore this question, researchers conducted an experiment involving 100 male participants between the ages of 18 and 24. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: those who watched a film featuring heterosexual sexual intercourse, those who listened to a podcast describing homosexual relationships, and those who did neither. Afterwards, participants completed a survey asking about their perception of themselves and others regarding gender identity, sexual orientation, body image, relationship satisfaction, and risk-taking behavior. They also rated their level of agreement with statements such as "I feel confident in my appearance" or "I would be happy if I had more sexual partners." Results showed that those who watched the film reported higher levels of satisfaction with their physical appearance compared to those in the other two groups, while both groups reported similar levels of confidence in their relationship skills. Interestingly, however, those who heard the podcast reported lower levels of social anxiety than those who saw the film. The findings suggest that exposure to different types of media can influence how young people perceive themselves and their romantic prospects, impacting everything from body image to sexual performance.

It is clear that media representations of sexuality play an important role in shaping adolescent sexual development.

How does sexual imitation of media figures influence self-perception, normative sexual expectations, and risk-taking among adolescents?

Media figures such as celebrities or influencers often display unrealistic body images that can lead to feelings of dissatisfaction with one's own physical appearance. Additionally, media messages about sex and relationships may promote certain behaviors that are not always safe or healthy. Adolescents who closely identify with these figures may feel pressure to engage in similar behaviors themselves, which could result in risky behavior.
