Immersive and AI-enhanced pornography experiences have been gaining popularity among adult viewers in recent years, but their impact on empathy, perspective-taking, and relational cognition remains unclear. Research has shown that individuals who consume these types of media may experience desensitization to real-life sexual encounters and develop negative attitudes towards women, which can lead to problematic behaviors such as violence against them.
Some argue that AI-enhanced pornography may help people learn about different perspectives and build better emotional connections with others. The purpose of this article is to provide a comprehensive analysis of how immersive and AI-enhanced pornography affects empathy, perspective-taking, and relational cognition by examining the current research literature and discussing potential implications for future studies.
Empathy refers to the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. Empathic responses are important in social interactions because they allow us to connect with others and form meaningful relationships. Studies have found that exposure to violent or degrading media, including pornography, can reduce empathy by decreasing the individual's sensitivity to others' emotions and increasing aggression toward them (Bushman & Anderson, 20015). Specifically, exposure to sexually explicit material that portrays women as objects or victims of abuse can lead to objectification and desensitization to violence (Fredrickson et al., 2002; Buss & Shackelford, 1997).
Perspective-taking refers to the ability to recognize and understand someone else's point of view. It involves imagining oneself in someone else's shoes and considering their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Research has shown that individuals who engage in empathetic perspective-taking tend to be more compassionate and prosocial than those who do not (Singer et al., 2006). Immersive and AI-enhanced pornography may enhance perspective-taking skills by allowing users to experience different sexual scenarios from a first-person perspective.
Some VR-based pornography allows users to switch between the perspectives of different characters during a scene, which could help them understand the experiences of both partners.
It is unclear whether this type of immersion leads to greater empathy and perspective-taking overall.
Relational cognition refers to the cognitive processes involved in maintaining close relationships with others. This includes communication, emotion regulation, and conflict resolution. Studies have found that positive relational cognitions are associated with better relationship outcomes, including higher levels of intimacy, satisfaction, and commitment (Reis et al., 2004). Immersive and AI-enhanced pornography may affect relational cognition by altering the way people think about sex and relationships.
It can reinforce gender stereotypes and promote objectification of women, leading to negative attitudes toward them (Bergner & Hesson-McInnis, 2015). In addition, it can lead to unrealistic expectations about sexual behavior and communication, making it difficult for individuals to form healthy relationships in real life (Gilbert & Allan, 2017).
Despite these potential drawbacks, research suggests that AI-enhanced pornography may have some benefits for empathy and perspective-taking. Some studies have shown that exposure to diverse sexual content can increase awareness of different cultural and individual preferences (Bergner & Hesson-McInnis, 2015), while others suggest that VR-based pornography may improve communication skills through role-playing scenarios (Koureas et al., 2019). Further research is needed to explore the impact of immersive and AI-enhanced pornography on empathy, perspective-taking, and relational cognition. Future studies could examine how specific features of these media influence their effects and whether they can be used as tools for emotional learning and growth.
Immersive and AI-enhanced pornography experiences may impact empathy, perspective-taking, and relational cognition in complex ways. While there are potential benefits, such as increased awareness of diversity and improved communication skills, there are also risks involved. It is important to consider both the positive and negative implications when exploring these technologies and ensure that they are used responsibly. By continuing to study the effects of these media, we can better understand their potential uses and limitations in our lives and societies.

How do immersive and AI-enhanced pornography experiences impact empathy, perspective-taking, and relational cognition?
Immersive and AI-enhanced pornography experiences can have a significant impact on empathy, perspective-taking, and relational cognition by promoting objectification of sexual partners, fostering unrealistic expectations and desires, and reinforcing gendered power dynamics.
