HOW DOES DIGITAL SEXUAL CONTENT AFFECT OUR ATTITUDE TOWARDS RISKTAKING, RELATIONSHIPS AND EXPECTATIONS? enIT FR DE PL PT RU JA CN ES

Researchers have observed an increasing amount of people consuming digital sexual content such as pornography and dating apps online. While there are many positive aspects to this trend, it has raised concerns about whether digital media is influencing individuals' attitudes towards sexual behavior, including their willingness to take risks and develop expectations around romantic and sexual partnerships. Can exposure to digital sexual content increase tolerance for sexual risk-taking, influence internalized sexual scripts, and shape relational expectations across various partner types? To answer these research questions, we will explore existing studies examining how digital media affects sexual behavior and attitudes.

Review of Literature

Several studies suggest that increased access to digital sexual content may lead to increased sexual risk-taking.

One study found that men who frequently view pornography were more likely to report engaging in unsafe sex practices compared to those who watched less pornography (Olson & Dittus, 2014). Another study discovered that young adults exposed to greater amounts of digital sexual content reported higher levels of sexual risk-taking behaviors, such as having multiple partners or unprotected sex (Rothman et al., 2017). These findings indicate that exposure to digital sexual material could impact individuals' perceptions of acceptable sexual behavior, potentially leading to heightened risk-taking.

Some research suggests that digital media may alter people's beliefs regarding appropriate sexual relationships. A recent study revealed that young women who consumed a significant amount of digital sexual content had lower standards when it came to selecting potential partners, compared to those who did not consume this type of content (Herring, Simpson, & McNeely, 2019). This finding aligns with previous research demonstrating that exposure to digital sexual content can affect an individual's beliefs about what is desirable in a relationship (e.g., body image ideals), which may then influence their choices for future romantic or sexual partners (McKee et al., 2020).

There is evidence indicating that digital media consumption patterns may shape expectations around sexual and romantic relationships across various partner types. One study showed that young men who viewed explicit online videos were more likely to believe that women wanted to be submissive during sex than those who did not view these videos (Lippa, 2018). Similarly, another study found that heterosexual couples who used dating apps tended to have less committed partnerships, suggesting that the use of digital technologies could influence relational expectations between partners (Stinson, 2016).

Methodology

To investigate whether digital media influences sexual attitudes and behaviors, we will conduct a series of experiments using surveys, interviews, and behavioral measures. Firstly, we will collect data on individuals' levels of digital media usage, including pornography and dating app use. Secondly, we will ask participants to complete questionnaires regarding their sexual attitudes, such as willingness to engage in risky behavior and standards for potential partners.

We will assess participants' actual sexual behavior by observing their interactions with potential partners. By analyzing these variables together, we can explore how digital media consumption impacts sexual behavior and attitudes over time.

Can exposure to digital sexual content increase tolerance for sexual risk-taking, influence internalized sexual scripts, and shape relational expectations across various partnership types?

There is research evidence suggesting that exposure to digital sexual content can have an impact on individuals' sexual attitudes, behaviors, and relationship dynamics. Exposure to sexually explicit material may lead to increased tolerance for sexual risk-taking among some individuals, particularly those who are already prone to engage in risky sexual behavior (e. g. , teenagers).
