HOW DOES BHUTANESE RELIGIOSITY AFFECT EROTIC SELFCONCEPT AND ETHICAL NEGOTIATIONS IN INTIMACY?

The purpose of this paper is to explore how Bhutanese religiosity influences erotic self-concept, sexual restraint, and ethical negotiation in intimate relationships.

Bhutan, located in the Himalayas between China and India, is a small country with a population of about 800,0000 people. Its official religion is Buddhism, but it also has strong ties to indigenous belief systems such as Bon and Bön Po and modern religions such as Christianity. According to World Values Survey data from 2014, 75% of Bhutanese identify as Buddhist, while only 9% are Christian and 16% adhere to other religions. In terms of religious practices, daily rituals such as prayer and meditation are common among Bhutanese, with prayer being a particularly important component of Bhutanese culture.

Traditional dances, songs, and folklore often have religious themes and are performed during festivals. The role of monasteries in Bhutanese society is significant, with many residents visiting them for spiritual guidance and support.

Despite these strong religious traditions, there is little research on how they influence erotic self-concept, sexual restraint, or ethical negotiations within intimate relationships.

This paper will focus on three aspects of erotic self-concept: personal attitudes towards sex, cultural norms regarding appropriate behavior, and gender roles in sexual encounters. Regarding personal attitudes towards sex, Bhutanese may hold more conservative views than Westerners due to their emphasis on chastity and purity. According to one study by Chhoki et al., most Bhutanese women view premarital sex as immoral and wrong, while men may be more open to it depending on their social status and economic situation. As for cultural norms about appropriate behavior, Bhutanese have a strong sense of propriety and respect for elders, which can impact their approach to intimacy.

Public displays of affection are frowned upon and considered disrespectful, even between married couples. Gender roles also play a significant role in Bhutanese sexuality, with women expected to be submissive and obedient. These expectations can create challenges when it comes to negotiation over sexual desires or boundaries.

Regarding sexual restraint, Bhutanese monks and nuns follow strict rules dictating what activities are acceptable and unacceptable. Sexual abstinence is highly valued and often encouraged among monks and nuns, who must observe celibacy vows.

Some argue that this emphasis on restraint can lead to negative consequences such as suppressed emotions or feelings of shame.

The lack of open dialogue around sexuality means that many Bhutanese individuals struggle with understanding their own sexual needs and preferences. This can result in difficulties navigating intimate relationships and negotiating ethical boundaries.

The influence of religiosity on erotic self-concept, sexual restraint, and ethical negotiations within intimate relationships is complex and multifaceted. While some aspects of Bhutanese culture promote purity and chastity, others encourage exploration and openness. Further research is needed to better understand how these factors interact and how they affect individual experiences of love and desire.

How does Bhutanese religiosity influence erotic self-concept, sexual restraint, and ethical negotiation in intimate relationships?

Bhutan is famous for its strong religious culture, which influences various aspects of life in the country, including people's perceptions of sex and love. Religious beliefs about purity and sin often impact how people perceive and experience their sexuality and romantic relationships. The Bhutanese culture values marriage as a sacred union between two individuals who are committed to each other both emotionally and physically, and adultery is considered morally wrong.
