HOW CAN LGBTQ INDIVIDUALS DEVELOP THEIR UNIQUE IDENTITY WHILE NAVIGATING SOCIETYS DIFFERENT EXPECTATIONS?

LGBTQ is an acronym for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning. It includes all genders, gender identities, and sexual orientations that are non-heteronormative. In this essay, I will discuss how LGBTQ individuals develop their unique identity amidst society's different expectations, especially those from family and peers.

Society's Expectations

Society expects people to be heterosexual and cisgendered; it does not accept differences.

When someone behaves like they are attracted to someone of the same sex, they might be called homophobic names or discriminated against. This may make them feel uncomfortable and ashamed of themselves. Some societies also require conformity to traditional roles such as being masculine or feminine based on genitals rather than personal preference. Therefore, LGBTQ individuals struggle to fit into these molds which can cause identity crisis.

Family's Expectations

Families are supposed to support and love each other no matter what but sometimes this isn't always the case. Parents may reject their children if they find out they're LGBTQ because they cannot understand why they chose a life away from norms. Families want grandchildren so there is pressure to marry someone opposite sex. If parents do not agree with their child's orientation, they could cut ties with them entirely. This can leave LGBTQ people feeling isolated and alone.

Peer's Expectations

Peers influence an individual's sense of self, including appearance, behavior, beliefs, values, and preferences.

Peer pressure can force LGBTQ individuals into hiding their true selves. They may feel pressured to act straight or hide their sexuality for fear of judgment. It can lead to depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem.

Coherent Sense of Self

Despite all these challenges, LGBTQ individuals manage to develop a coherent sense of self through various strategies.

Some join communities where they meet people like them and learn more about their identities. Others seek therapy or counseling to work through issues affecting their self-image. Some choose to ignore societal expectations and focus on themselves instead. With time and experience, LGBTQ individuals discover who they are without society's influence.

How do LGBTQ individuals develop a coherent sense of self when navigating conflicting societal, familial, and peer expectations?

LGBTQ individuals often experience conflicts between their personal identities and social norms due to varying societal, familial, and peer expectations. As such, they may struggle with developing a coherent sense of self that aligns with these competing influences. Some ways in which they can navigate this conflict include seeking support from affirming communities, exploring their identity through introspection, and understanding that their identity is complex and multifaceted.
