Erotic expression also has the potential to empower individuals by giving them control over their own bodies and emotions. In this essay, I will examine how protesters weaponize erotic expression to challenge political authority through three examples: the Women's March in Washington D.C., the SlutWalk movement in Toronto, Canada, and the "Pussyhat Project" initiative during the 2017 inauguration of Donald Trump.
In January 2017, hundreds of thousands of women gathered in Washington D.C. for the Women's March, one of the largest demonstrations ever held in American history. The march was a response to Donald Trump's victory in the presidential election and his stated policy positions on issues like abortion, LGBTQ rights, immigration, and healthcare. Many participants wore pink hats with cat ears (nicknamed "pussyhats") as a symbol of solidarity and resistance. The hats were made famous when they were worn by celebrities at the Grammy Awards ceremony just before the march. The pussyhat became an emblem of female power and sexual freedom, especially after Trump referred to grabbing women without consent as "locker room talk." The project was coordinated online by knitters who wanted to make something positive out of a negative situation. The organizers of the Pussyhat Project used social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook to promote the idea, and people from all over the world contributed to the cause. By reclaiming the word "pussy," activists turned it into a symbol of empowerment instead of shame or fear.
