HONORING SHAMEFUL BEHAVIOR: UNPACKING THE INTERSECTION OF RELIGION, GENDER, SEXUALITY, AND VIOLENCE

2 min read Theology

Honor-based violence refers to physical and psychological abuse committed against individuals perceived to have brought dishonor upon their family or community, often related to sexual behavior and transgressions from traditional norms of gender and sexuality. This form of violence is widespread globally but particularly prevalent in Muslim societies, where it can take various forms such as domestic violence, honor killings, forced marriages, child marriage, female genital mutilation, and forced virginity testing. Honor-based violence intersects with religious sexual morality in many ways that limit women's sexual agency and relational autonomy. Religious beliefs about purity, chastity, and modesty shape expectations for women's conduct, which can lead to restrictions on their sexual expression and mobility.

The Quran emphasizes the importance of protecting women's dignity and avoiding shameful behaviors like adultery, which may be used to justify honor-based violence if a woman engages in illicit sex. Some Islamic scholars argue that women should be covered up in public and segregated from men to prevent temptation and maintain honor. In conservative Muslim communities, girls are expected to remain virgins until marriage and married women must be obedient and faithful to their husbands. These restrictive norms curtail women's decision-making power over their own bodies and relationships, leading to limited freedom and potential harm when they violate them. Honor-based violence may also be used as a means of punishment for sexual transgression, including rape, extramarital affairs, premarital or same-sex relationships, divorce, or perceived immorality. Women who break these social codes face physical retribution and even death, often at the hands of family members or community leaders. This creates an environment where women cannot freely express their desires or needs without fear of reprisal, compromising their ability to control their intimate lives. To combat honor-based violence, it is essential to challenge patriarchal ideologies that link women's behavior with family honor and advocate for gender equality and empowerment. Governments and organizations need to take action to prosecute perpetrators and provide support for victims, but individuals can also contribute by challenging traditional beliefs about gender roles and championing women's rights within families and communities. By addressing both structural and cultural factors, we can promote women's agency and autonomy while respecting religious values and promoting justice and safety for all.

How does honor-based violence intersect with religious sexual morality to limit female sexual agency and relational autonomy?

In many cultures, both religious and nonreligious, women's sexuality is often policed and restricted due to social norms. Honor-based violence, which involves violent acts of intimidation, abuse, and even murder against women who are perceived as having transgressed traditional gender roles or behaviors, can exacerbate these restrictions by placing additional pressure on women to conform to certain expectations regarding their behavior.
