HEADLINE WILL LGBT ACCEPTANCE EVER BE ACHIEVED? AN EXPLORATION OF HISTORICAL LEGACYS EFFECT ON CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY

2 min read Lesbian

There has been an increasing awareness of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBT) rights and their place in society. This is especially true for the military community where policies have changed to allow more openness about sexual orientation and gender identity.

Historical legacies continue to influence contemporary inclusion, policy, and acceptance of LGBT personnel in many ways.

Some countries still criminalize same-sex behavior while others are yet to legalize same-sex marriage. The history of excluding LGBT people from serving in the military dates back to ancient times when homosexuality was seen as unnatural and immoral. In fact, most cultures throughout human history have discriminated against LGBT individuals based on religious beliefs or cultural norms. As such, the modern era has witnessed a shift towards accepting LGBT individuals into mainstream culture but this change has come slowly.

The impact of historical legacies can be seen in various areas of life including employment opportunities, healthcare accessibility, education systems, family structures, public accommodations, and even housing situations.

Discrimination against LGBT employees continues despite anti-discrimination laws because they face societal stigma that prevents them from obtaining jobs or promotions due to their sexual orientations or gender identities. Similarly, health insurance companies often exclude coverage of transition-related surgeries or treatments leaving transgender persons without adequate medical care. Also, families may reject members who identify as LGBT leading to emotional distress and disconnection from support networks.

Public facilities like bathrooms, restaurants, hotels, etc., often deny entry to those whose appearance does not match their sex assigned at birth.

Landlords refuse to rent homes or apartments if they suspect tenants might engage in same-sex relationships which limits housing options for LGBT people.

It is evident that historical legacies play an important role in shaping contemporary attitudes about inclusion, policy, and acceptance of LGBT personnel. While some progress has been made over time through activism and legislation there is still much work left to do before true equality is achieved for all members of society regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

In what ways do historical legacies affect contemporary inclusion, policy, and acceptance of LGBT personnel?

Historical legacies have played a significant role in shaping current policies regarding LGBT personnel inclusion. As early as 1948, the United States Department of Defense (DoD) established its official policy of excluding lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals from serving in the armed forces due to their sexual orientation or gender identity, which remained in effect until September 2011.
