Does consistent emotional support from a partner predict higher sexual responsiveness, desire, and relational satisfaction?
Researchers have investigated whether the quality of partners' relationship is associated with their frequency and quality of sexual activity and relationship satisfaction. Studies suggest that sexual activity may increase relationship satisfaction for both men and women when it occurs frequently and in ways that are enjoyable and pleasurable.
This association between sexual behavior and relationship satisfaction may be moderated by various factors such as emotional closeness, attachment style, and marital status. Emotional support refers to how individuals provide support to each other in times of distress or difficulty. Previous studies indicate that individuals who experience greater levels of emotional support from their partner tend to report greater feelings of attachment, trust, and love towards them, which can enhance relationship outcomes. This study aimed to determine if a partner's level of emotional support predicted higher sexual behaviors, including sexual desires, arousal, intimacy, and satisfaction. The researchers hypothesized that individuals receiving high levels of emotional support would report more frequent sexual activities, stronger sexual desires, and better sexual communication than those experiencing low levels of emotional support. To test this hypothesis, they conducted a correlational study using data from an online survey of 108 couples (49% heterosexual) ranging from ages 21-76 years old, all living in North America. Participants were recruited through social media and self-selected into the study. They completed measures assessing various aspects of their romantic relationships, including their own and their partner's level of emotional support, sexual responsiveness, desire, and satisfaction.
The results supported the researcher's hypothesis: participants who received greater emotional support from their partners reported having more frequent sexual encounters, feeling more sexually satisfied with their partners, and experiencing increased physical pleasure during sexual activity. Specifically, individuals reporting higher levels of emotional support from their partner engaged in sexual behavior at least once per week, while those receiving lower levels only did so a few times per month or less frequently. In addition, people with high levels of emotional support were more likely to feel comfortable discussing sexual desires and preferences with their partner, resulting in more enjoyable and pleasurable sexual experiences.
These findings suggest that consistent emotional support from a partner is associated with higher rates of sexual responsiveness, desire, and relational satisfaction.
Future research should examine how other factors such as gender, age, relationship length, and cultural background may influence these associations.
Longitudinal studies are needed to determine if emotional support predicts changes over time in sexual behaviors and relationship outcomes.
Consistent emotional support from a partner can positively impact sexual behaviors, desires, and relational satisfaction for both men and women. Individuals receiving high levels of emotional support tend to engage in more frequent sexual activities, report stronger sexual desires, and experience improved sexual communication with their partner. These findings have implications for couples counseling, where therapists could help couples improve their emotional connection by addressing any existing issues affecting intimacy and trust.
Promoting positive emotional closeness between partners can promote healthy sexual relationships and overall relationship satisfaction.

A recent research study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine investigated the effects of emotional support on sexuality among couples (Smith et al. , 2019). The study involved a sample of 35 heterosexual individuals who were in long-term relationships with their partners for at least one year.
