How Does Exposure to Cross-Cultural Military Environments Affect Relational Expectations and Norms?
Explore this question that investigates how individuals' experiences in different cultures may have an impact on their perceptions and expectations regarding relationships. By analyzing cross-cultural data from interviews with active service members, veterans, diplomats, aid workers, and peacekeepers from various countries, we hope to uncover patterns and trends that could inform strategies for promoting healthy relationships across cultures.
The military is known for its ability to foster strong bonds among people from diverse backgrounds, often under challenging conditions. In addition, many soldiers stationed abroad are involved in humanitarian or diplomatic missions, working closely with local communities and interacting with civilians daily. These experiences can shape individual perspectives on love, sex, intimacy, and other aspects of relational life in ways that go beyond traditional notions of nationality or race.
Research Methodology
Our research methodology involves surveying current and former military personnel who have served in multiple countries and interviewing them about their experiences with cross-cultural interaction. The participants were asked to share stories and reflections on the unique characteristics of each culture they lived in, including customs, language, food, religion, dress, leisure activities, and social attitudes toward intimate relationships. We also inquired about how these factors affected their expectations regarding what constitutes a healthy relationship and how those perceptions might differ from what they learned growing up in their home country.
Findings
