EXPLORING THE ERASURE OF QUEER VOICES: HOW POWER DYNAMICS AND CULTURAL STEREOTYPES SHAPE SEXUAL IDENTITY POLITICS

2 min read Queer

Queerness is an umbrella term for diverse gender identities and sexual orientations that go beyond the binary categories of man/woman or heterosexual/homosexual. Queer people have been marginalized, discriminated against, and excluded from society throughout history. In recent years, there has been increased awareness and visibility of their struggles, yet they still face significant challenges in everyday life. One of these challenges is the erasure of queer voices in political and institutional spaces. This phenomenon occurs when queer individuals are silenced, ignored, or misrepresented in official discourse and decision-making processes, denying them equal representation and participation in shaping public policies.

Various factors contribute to this erasure. First, cultural stereotypes about gender and sexuality perpetuate normative expectations of masculinity and femininity, which exclude non-binary and nonconforming identities. Second, dominant social structures privilege heteronormativity, rendering other forms of intimacy invisible or illegitimate. Third, power dynamics lead to the marginalization of minority groups, such as LGBTQIA+ communities, who lack access to resources and opportunities compared to cisgender and heterosexual populations.

Institutional discrimination creates barriers to political engagement and representation, such as unequal funding, limited infrastructure, and biased recruitment practices. These mechanisms reinforce each other, creating a vicious cycle of oppression and erasure.

To combat erasure, we must challenge harmful narratives, dismantle unjust institutions, and create inclusive spaces for all voices. This involves promoting intersectionality, recognizing how overlapping systems of oppression intersect to exacerbate marginalization. It also requires collective action, solidarity across movements, and coalition building among diverse actors. By working together, we can advocate for legislation, policies, and initiatives that recognize the diversity of human experience and promote equity for all.

What mechanisms perpetuate erasure of queer voices in political and institutional life?

The marginalization and exclusion of queer voices from political and institutional life can be attributed to several factors that perpetuate erasure. One such factor is homophobia which persists in our society due to social conditioning and discriminatory attitudes towards sexual orientation. This leads to the denial of equal access to opportunities for LGBTQ+ individuals and their suppression in public spaces.
