The study was conducted to investigate how romantic relationships between employees have an effect on workplace performance, particularly team cohesion and collective problem-solving ability. Cohesion is a construct that describes the strength of social bonds among individuals within a group while collective problem solving refers to the capacity of a group to solve difficult tasks together. Several studies have reported conflicting results regarding this phenomenon. Some researchers found that these relationships can be beneficial for teams' cohesion while others suggested that it has no significant impact.
There are several reasons why this issue should be addressed. First, companies increasingly allow their workers to date each other, which is known as "workplace romances," due to the benefits it could bring such as higher morale and increased productivity. Second, some organizations may even encourage them because they believe that interpersonal relationships enhance job satisfaction and creativity. Third, despite its potential benefits, unrequited love or failed relationships at work can also cause negative consequences like decreased motivation and conflict. Therefore, exploring the impact of these relations on the team's cohesion and collective problem-solving abilities is crucial to understand whether they are worth encouraging or discouraging in the workplace.

Research methodology:
The study used a cross-sectional survey design with a sample of 200 employees from different industries. The participants were asked about their relationship status (single, dating coworker, married) and the extent to which they agreed with statements related to cohesion (e.g., "I feel close to my colleagues") and collective problem-solving ability (e.g., "Our team members share information effectively"). The survey was conducted online, and the data analysis was done using statistical methods.
Results:
The results revealed that romantic relationships between employees had a positive effect on both team cohesion and collective problem-solving ability. More specifically, couples who were dating reported greater team cohesion than singles and those who did not have a partner.
They scored higher on collective problem-solving ability compared to the other groups.
This association only held true for teams where both partners worked together daily, suggesting that it may be more beneficial when both individuals contribute equally to tasks.
There was no evidence that dating coworkers had any negative effects on these constructs.
Discussion:
This finding confirms previous studies showing that romantic relationships at work can enhance team performance by increasing social bonds among employees. It also suggests that the key factor is how much time the couple spends working together since it allows them to better understand each other's strengths and weaknesses. Moreover, it contradicts previous research claiming that dating coworkers may negatively affect job satisfaction or productivity because of unrequited love.
It provides valuable insights for organizations by identifying situations in which promoting intra-group romances could benefit their employees without causing any detrimental effects on teamwork.
Our study found that romantic relationships at work can positively impact team cohesion and collective problem-solving ability as long as both members are actively involved in team tasks. Therefore, companies should consider allowing their workers to date if they want to boost productivity and morale while avoiding conflicts and decreased motivation. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether these relations are always desirable or necessary, and further research is needed to explore this issue more thoroughly.
How do romantic relationships at work affect team cohesion and collective problem-solving?
Romantic relationships in the workplace can be complicated, as they can potentially have both positive and negative impacts on team cohesion and collective problem-solving. On one hand, these relationships may create feelings of personal attachment between team members, which can lead to increased loyalty and support among the group. This can strengthen communication channels and improve collaboration when working on projects together.
