ENHANCING EMOTIONAL WELLBEING THROUGH LGBTQ+ FAITH COMMUNITIES: A PERSONAL JOURNEY

2 min read Queer

As an LGBTQ individual, I have found that participating in inclusive faith communities can greatly enhance my emotional well-being, spiritual resilience, and identity development. These benefits are achieved through various means, such as forming strong connections with others who share similar experiences, gaining insight into myself and my beliefs, and learning how to navigate the challenges of being queer in a society that often rejects it.

One of the most significant ways participation in these communities has helped me is by providing a sense of belonging and acceptance. When surrounded by people who understand and support me, I feel less isolated and more able to be my true self without fear of judgment. This can lead to increased feelings of happiness, self-confidence, and overall mental health. It also allows me to explore my sexuality and gender expression freely without feeling ashamed or judged for doing so.

Another way participation has benefited me is by giving me a place to question and challenge my beliefs and values. In these spaces, I am encouraged to examine my faith from new perspectives and learn about different interpretations of scripture and doctrine. This has allowed me to deepen my understanding of my own beliefs and strengthen my relationship with God.

It has given me the opportunity to grow spiritually through prayer, worship, and service.

Participation in inclusive faith communities has also been instrumental in helping me develop my identity as a member of the LGBTQ community. By surrounding myself with individuals who share similar experiences, I am better equipped to deal with prejudice and discrimination and have access to resources that can aid in my growth and healing.

It helps me connect with other members of the community and find common ground with them on issues such as social justice and advocacy.

Participation in inclusive faith communities can promote emotional well-being, spiritual resilience, and identity development among LGBTQ individuals by fostering a sense of belongingness, community support, and personal growth through religious practices and beliefs. Research shows that LGBTQ individuals who feel accepted and supported in their faith communities are less likely to experience depression and anxiety symptoms and have higher levels of life satisfaction compared to those who do not (Hill et al.
