DUALISM AND ITS IMPACT ON SEXUAL INTIMACY: EXPLORING THE COMPLEX RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MIND & BODY

3 min read Theology

Dualism is a philosophical doctrine that maintains there are two distinct realities, which exist independently from one another but interact to create reality. In contrast, monism holds that all things are ultimately of the same nature and substance. Religious dualism teaches that man has both a material body and an immaterial soul that cannot be reconciled into unity. This means that even though they may share some characteristics like their physical structure, these components are fundamentally different and will never merge seamlessly. The relationship between them is more complex than being either complementary or oppositional. The duality can lead to tension due to conflicting interests and desires within the individual. It also affects how one perceives sexual activity and relates to others during it. While some people might view sexual experiences as physical actions involving the body, others treat them as spiritual encounters between souls or spirits. This creates a conflict between the mind and body, which leads to confusion about what should happen during erotic activities. People who subscribe to religious dualism often feel guilty when engaging in such acts because they believe they are committing sin against God. Some people see sex as dirty or wrong, while others use it for pleasure without considering its repercussions.

In the context of erotic self-perception, dualism implies that humans have separate identities—one mental/spiritual and one physical/biological. Therefore, they perceive themselves differently depending on whether they are thinking or acting physically.

Someone may think of herself as pure and holy but act promiscuously with various partners. Another person might feel his sexual urges are stronger than his moral compass, making him feel torn between good and evil when he indulges in them.

This perception is problematic because it limits the possibility of integrating both aspects of ourselves into our daily lives harmoniously. Eroticism has a spiritual dimension that transcends physicality; therefore, we need to acknowledge and accept this reality to enjoy intimacy fully. If we do not recognize this aspect, we become incomplete individuals who cannot experience life's joys fully.

Erotic experiences can be enhanced by focusing on the present moment rather than judging them according to preconceived ideas about morality.

When it comes to embodied experience, religious dualists tend to view their bodies as objects to be used for reproduction or pleasure instead of holistic entities capable of experiencing joy and pain simultaneously. This attitude leads to body dysmorphia where people focus too much on appearance over function and health. It also creates tension between mind and body leading to anxiety disorders like eating disorders or addiction. To overcome this tendency, individuals should learn how to appreciate their bodies without guilt or shame while avoiding excesses like overeating or under-exercising. The body needs nourishment and movement just like the soul requires self-reflection and restoration through meditation or prayer. We should strive towards balance so that all parts work together harmoniously without one dominating another.

How does religious dualism regarding body and soul influence erotic self-perception and embodied experience?

Religious dualism views the human being as consisting of two components: the material body and immaterial soul. According to this belief system, the physical body is considered inferior compared to the spiritual soul because it is prone to decay and imperfection. Therefore, many religions promote ascetic practices such as fasting, sexual abstinence, and celibacy as ways to control the desires of the flesh and elevate the soul's spirituality.
