The impact of religious identity on sexual orientation and gender expression has been studied extensively in recent years.
Little is known about how participating in inclusive religious communities influences ethical decision-making and moral judgement among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth. This study will explore how participation in such communities can shape ethical decision-making and moral judgment among this population.
Inclusive religious communities are those that welcome individuals from diverse backgrounds and lifestyles and do not discriminate against LGBTQ members. These communities offer a safe space for LGBTQ youth to express their identities freely without fear of being ostracized, which can be especially important during adolescence when they may struggle with their sexuality. Participation in these communities provides social support and acceptance, as well as opportunities to engage in spiritual practices and rituals that reinforce morality.
Ethical decision-making and moral judgment refer to the process of evaluating situations, making choices based on one's values, and taking responsibility for actions. Studies have shown that involvement in religious groups promotes ethical behavior by teaching values such as compassion, empathy, and respect.
Researchers also acknowledge that there may be differences between mainstream and minority religions regarding attitudes towards homosexuality. Inclusive religious communities offer a middle ground where LGBTQ youth can receive support while still practicing their faith.
To investigate this phenomenon, a qualitative approach was used. Interviews were conducted with 20 participants who identified as LGBTQ and had attended inclusive religious communities for at least six months. The results showed that participating in these communities influenced their ethical decision-making and moral judgement. Participants reported feeling empowered to make choices based on their own values rather than external pressure, and recognizing the importance of living according to their beliefs. They discussed how their participation helped them develop self-esteem and self-acceptance, leading to more confident decision-making and greater sensitivity to others.
This study has implications for understanding how religion can positively impact the development of LGBTQ youth and promote ethical decision-making. It also highlights the value of creating safe spaces within religious institutions where all individuals can feel accepted and supported. By supporting inclusive religious communities, we can promote positive outcomes for LGBTQ youth and help them navigate the challenges of adolescence with confidence and integrity.
In what ways does participation in inclusive religious communities influence ethical decision-making and moral judgment among LGBTQ youth?
According to research, involvement in an inclusive religious community can have both positive and negative effects on ethical decision-making and moral judgments among LGBTQ+ youth. On one hand, being part of a welcoming faith group may lead individuals to adopt more progressive values and beliefs regarding sexuality and gender identity.
