Existential support refers to actions that help people maintain their sense of meaning and purpose in life. Both types of support are necessary for healthy interpersonal relationships. But do they occur between lesbian friends?
Research suggests that they may. One study found that lesbian friends often share personal experiences related to their identities and experiences. They also provide each other with emotional support during times of stress or hardship. Lesbians who experience discrimination due to their sexual orientation may find solace in knowing they have allies in their friend groups. These activities could be considered ethically supportive because they promote equality and empathy among individuals.
There is less evidence regarding existential support. Some researchers argue that friendship itself can be a source of existential support by providing a sense of belonging and community. Other studies suggest that close friendships allow people to explore and understand themselves more deeply.
