DO LESBIAN FRIENDSHIPS PROVIDE ETHICAL & EXISTENTIAL SUPPORT?

2 min read Lesbian

Do lesbian friendships function as a practice of ethical and existential support? This question has been discussed for decades within academic literature, but there is still no clear answer. In this essay, I will explain what defines ethical and existential support, and then analyze whether it exists between women who identify as lesbians.

Ethical support refers to acts that promote justice, fairness, and mutual benefit in a social context. Existential support refers to actions that help people maintain their sense of meaning and purpose in life. Both types of support are necessary for healthy interpersonal relationships. But do they occur between lesbian friends?

Research suggests that they may. One study found that lesbian friends often share personal experiences related to their identities and experiences. They also provide each other with emotional support during times of stress or hardship. Lesbians who experience discrimination due to their sexual orientation may find solace in knowing they have allies in their friend groups. These activities could be considered ethically supportive because they promote equality and empathy among individuals.

There is less evidence regarding existential support. Some researchers argue that friendship itself can be a source of existential support by providing a sense of belonging and community. Other studies suggest that close friendships allow people to explore and understand themselves more deeply. While lesbian-identifying individuals may face unique challenges related to their gender and sexuality, this does not necessarily mean they cannot gain existential benefits from friendships.

While the evidence on ethical and existential support in lesbian friendships is mixed, these relationships may play an important role in promoting wellbeing. Further research is needed to determine how common these behaviors are and what factors contribute to them.

We should strive to create spaces where all individuals feel empowered to form healthy connections based on shared values and identities.

Do lesbian friendships function as a practice of ethical and existential support?

Lesbians form close friendships where they provide each other with both practical and emotional support. They are able to share personal information and experiences that may not be shared with friends who do not identify as LGBTQ+. In addition, many lesbian couples share mutual goals and desires for social justice and equality, which can strengthen their friendship through shared experiences and commonalities.
