DISCOVERING THE EFFECTS OF INSTITUTIONAL STIGMA ON RELATIONSHIPS AMONG SOLDIERS

Institutional stigma is a set of beliefs that can be found within an organization's culture or policies. This kind of stigma may cause shame for individuals who are part of that organization and it might make them hesitant to seek help when they need it. In this essay, I will explore how institutional stigmas related to relationships can affect the willingness of soldiers to reach out for assistance or support.

The military has always been known as one of the most masculine and macho professions in society. For centuries, men have gone to war together, but only recently did women start joining them. The idea of a woman entering a battlefield was taboo until World War II when they were needed to fill in gaps left by their husbands who had gone off to fight abroad. Since then, more and more women have joined the ranks of the armed forces.

Despite their increasing numbers, female service members still face challenges such as sexual harassment, discrimination, and misogyny from their male counterparts.

This type of treatment creates barriers between the sexes which makes it difficult for women to form healthy relationships while serving alongside men in close quarters environments like boot camp or deployment sites. When these barriers exist, both men and women are less likely to seek advice or support about intimacy issues because they feel embarrassed or ashamed about what others would think if they were caught doing so. It could also lead them down dangerous paths if they ignore signs that their relationship isn't working well enough or that there is abuse happening behind closed doors.

On top of gender-based stigma surrounding relationships within the army, there is also cultural bias against those who aren't heterosexual. Homophobia pervades every level of military culture from commanders down through enlisted personnel making it even harder for LGBTQ+ individuals to get help with relationship problems without being judged negatively.

Institutional stigmas related to relationships can influence soldiers' willingness to seek assistance or support due to shame and embarrassment over breaking social norms or fears of judgment from peers and superiors alike. With these attitudes present throughout all levels of the organization, it becomes much easier for people to suffer silently rather than speak up when something isn't right which puts them at risk for further harm down the line.

How does institutional stigma surrounding relationships influence soldiers' willingness to seek advice or support?

Institutional stigma is defined as social disapproval of an individual because they belong to a particular group (Cameron, 2016). This stigma can take many forms, but one common type is related to romantic or sexual relationships within the military community. Soldiers may be reluctant to seek help for their relationships because they fear that doing so will damage their reputation or career advancement opportunities.
