(CLEANSED BY GOD: HOW RELIGIOUS METAPHORS AFFECT OUR VIEWS ON SEX, INTIMACY, AND BODILY FLUIDS)

2 min read Theology

Religious metaphors of cleansing are often associated with purifying oneself from sinful behaviors like adultery, masturbation, and homosexuality. These metaphors imply that these acts are dirty or impure, and require cleansing through baptism, confession, and penance to restore one's spiritual state. This attitude can have negative effects on individuals who engage in such activities, leading them to feel shame and guilt about their bodies and desires. In some cases, this can lead to avoidance of sexual activity altogether, which can harm personal relationships and mental health. On the other hand, religious teachings on purification may also encourage positive attitudes toward bodily fluids and sex if they emphasize physical pleasure as a God-given gift that should be enjoyed responsibly within marriage.

Cleansing rituals are an integral part of many religions, including Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.

Jews practice Mikvah, a bathing ritual for women before marriage or after menstruating. Muslims perform Ghusl, a full-body washing after intercourse or ejaculation. Christians participate in baptisms and communion ceremonies. Each of these practices is designed to cleanse the body spiritually, but the language used to describe them implies that certain bodily fluids are inherently unclean. This negative view of bodily fluids can contribute to feelings of shame and embarrassment around sex. It can also make people more likely to engage in risky behavior, such as unprotected sex with multiple partners or having extramarital affairs.

The idea that sex is something to be ashamed of can harm relationships by creating distance between partners. If couples believe that sex is sinful or impure, they may avoid intimacy and connection in their relationship. They may also struggle with communication about their needs and desires, making it harder to build trust and emotional closeness. In contrast, religions that emphasize the beauty of sexual expression may help couples feel comfortable discussing their needs and desires openly.

Religious metaphors of cleansing have a complex effect on attitudes toward bodily fluids and sex. While they may encourage some positive behaviors like abstinence and faithfulness, they can also lead to negative outcomes like shame and guilt. To address these issues, religions should focus on promoting healthy relationships based on mutual respect and understanding rather than emphasizing purity and taboo.
