Can the study of sexual ethics in politics reveal unspoken rules of elite conduct and governance? Politics is often understood as a game of power, manipulation, and competition. In this context, many political actors seem to be driven by self-interest and personal ambitions rather than collective goals. Therefore, it may come as no surprise that some scholars have proposed that there are also sexual dimensions to politics. They suggest that politicians' behavior might reflect their beliefs about gender relations and power dynamics. To explore this hypothesis, I will focus on the relationship between politics and sexuality. Sexual ethics refers to the set of principles governing people's attitudes toward sex. It includes both norms and values associated with sexual desires, actions, and behaviors. Some scholars argue that these ethics shape the way we think about ourselves and others and can be applied to different spheres, including politics.
They argue that politicians who violate certain moral codes regarding sex may be seen as deviant from the norm, while those adhering to them could be considered more legitimate and worthy of respect. So far, little research has examined how political actors negotiate sexual ethics in their interactions.
Preliminary findings suggest that even though politicians tend to present themselves as responsible, well-behaved individuals, their private lives might reveal something else. One example comes from recent allegations against former US President Donald Trump. Several women accused him of misconduct, including sexual assault and unwanted advances. Even if he denied these claims, his reputation suffered. Yet, despite the widespread criticism, he was able to remain in office for four years. This case suggests that politicians' public image may not always match their private conduct. In addition, studies on sexual harassment in politics found evidence suggesting that some politicians use intimidation and coercion to impose their sexual interests on their subordinates. The study of sexual ethics in politics holds promise because it allows us to understand power dynamics beyond what is visible to the naked eye. Through this lens, we can learn about the hidden rules of elite conduct and governance, which are often invisible to the untrained observer.
Can the study of sexual ethics in politics reveal unspoken rules of elite conduct and governance?
Sexuality is an integral part of human existence, but it can also be a source of power and social control. When politicians and other leaders engage in sexual misconduct, they often do so with impunity because their actions are seen as personal matters that should not interfere with public life.
